DRV5015: Feasibility of measuring DC current

Part Number: DRV5015
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV5056, TMCS1100, DRV5055, TMCS1101

Hi,

I am looking for a low cost solution to measure DC Current.

Can the device be used for DC current measurement by running a trace below the device?

If yes, then please share the application note if available.

DC current upto 6A needs to be measured.

  • Dwaipayan,

Thanks for reaching out with your question.  DRV5015 is a latched Hall effect sensor.  If the field produced by the current carrying wire were sufficient to toggle the device it would require the opposite polarity field in order to release the output state or a power reset.  I expect this is likely not how you intend to use the device.

A linear hall effect sensor such as DRV5055 or DRV5056 might be able to be used for this purpose, but are not intended specifically for this purpose.  Using one of these devices assumes that the field is sufficiently strong to produce a measurable change in input field.  We do offer TMCS1100 and TMCS1101 which are both Hall current sensors.

I would recommend that you check out our Hall current sensors here:

    https://www.ti.com/sensors/magnetic-sensors/hall-effect-current/overview.html

You may find a set of application notes and technical articles at the bottom of each device's product page.

    Thanks,

    Scott
