TDC7201: Use the TDC7201 to measure the Gun speed

Part Number: TDC7201

hi sir

Can I use the TDC7201 to measure the Gun speed ? Any suggestion?

  • Alex,

Thanks for reaching out with your question.  TDC7201 can be used for time of flight.  It has a minimum time between start and stop signals of 12 ns.  So, if using a laser pulse to measure the object position, the light must travel >360cm in order to properly trigger the stop signal. Ultrasound can also be used, but it would be more ideal in cases where the object is travelling below the speed of sound.  If the speed being tracked exceeds the speed of sound it would not be an ideal case to trigger TDC7201 using this option.

For characterization purposes, it would be possible to use a high speed camera and a precise ruler in the background to measure projectile motion.  With a fixed frame rate, the position of the object can be measured against the background in order to determine the time required to travel a specific distance.

However, if the goal is to measure every time the device is used then it would be necessary to meet the timing requirements and overcome any alignment challenges that may exist.
