LDCCOILEVM: Rectangular coil application

Hello,

Since coil "E" is the only rectangular coil among this reference coils board, I'm wondering which is TI's recommendation for this coil type. I mean, what should be the target shape and what is the optimal plane of movement?

Hello Daniel,

The rectangular coils are designed for a linear sensing application. Please see the LDC1612 LDC1614 Linear Position Sensing (Rev. A) app note for more information on this coil type and application.

Hello Justin,

The coils shown in this app note are "stretched" rather than rectangular, it leads to my next question: stretched and rectangular coils have the same performance for a lateral movement measurement with a rectangular target?

Or are rectangular coils more suitable in lateral movement measurements with triangular targets?

Hello Daniel,

My apologies. The rectangular and stretched coils are not the same. A rectangular coil is similar to the racetrack (oval) style in that it is beneficial if you don't have as much space. You can have your smaller side be the limited dimension and increase the longer side to increase the inductance of the coil. This is helpful when designing smaller coils.

Hello Daniel,

We normally recommend going with a circular coil unless you have a space constriction that would require your to change coil shape to maximize the inductance in your space. I highly recommend looking at the Sensor Design for Inductive Sensing Applications Using LDC (Rev. C) and LDC Target Design (Rev. B) app notes which will have more information. We also have the Inductive Sensing Design Calculator Tool (Rev. G) available to assist in coil design.
