MMWAVEICBOOST: MMWAVE STUDIO "Calling_ConnectTarget returned 3" ERROR

Part Number: MMWAVEICBOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843ISK, DCA1000EVM,

Hi allI am using the IWR6843ISK, the MMWAVEICBOOST and the DCA1000EVM.

I believe I have connected all cables right (one 5V/2.5A on the DCA1000EVM, one 5V/2.5A on the ICBOOST, one micro USB on XDS110 on ICBOOST, one micro-USB on FTDI on DCA1000EVM and the ethernet cable on DCA1000EVM).

I have also set all the DIP switches as per MMWAVEICBOOST documentation.

With these settings everything was working fine. By everything I mean I could capture raw data using mmWave Studio.

Now I removed R346 on the ICBOOST and put a 0 Ohm resistor across R348. I did this because I want to trigger/start the data collection using hardware i.e a rising edge on pin 9 of J15 on ICBOOST.

Now the problem is that RS232 Connection is failing on mmwave studio with error: RadarAPI]: Error: Connection failed: Calling_ConnectTarget returned 3.May someone please assist me debug my setup.

  • Hello Kukhokuhle Tsengwa,

Please note below caution note from the datasheet, when you are connecting Sync_in pin through the external triggering source, I/Os (In this case Sync_IN pin) would be driven always, especially when you power cycle the board. I.e. When you power cycle the board external signal generator would be still driving the Sync_in pin.

This violates the below condition and device would go into wrong boot mode or continuous usage of this state would cause reliability problem.

Hence remove all the external interfaces to the device, including Sync_in pin driver and try to boot it again and follow the previous procedure.

    Thanks and regards,

    CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.

  • Hi Chethan,

Unfortunately I am not sure I follow your suggestion.

May you please try to explain what i should do again clearer? I do not have any external signal on sync_in at the moment. I am just trying to connect to the radar in Mmwave Studio.

  • Hello

Please follow below step by step guide for capturing the raw ADC data from the DCA1000 in the the below thread.

  • Hi Chethan,

I have followed the exact steps and I am getting the error I mentioned in the original question in step: Capturing the radar data (4.2) on Page 14.

  • HI, there:

You can check the debug handbook, and search your error message

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors-group/sensors/f/sensors-forum/872161/faq-dca1000evm-dca1000evm-debug-resources

Did you still see all the COM port in the device manager?

    Best,

    Zigang

  • Hi I have fixed my issue! I just disconnected everything and connected it up again and everything worked! I do not know how.

However, I have another problem and I cannot ask a "new question" unfortunately. So I will just ask here. I hope that is okay.

    Hi all

I am trying to implement hardware trigger on the MMWAVEICBOOST.

I am supplying a 3.3V pulse into pin9 on the J5 connector (SYNC_IN). I have followed the advice on setting pulse width less than 1us but greater than or equal to 25ns. I have also followed the suggestion of sync_in pulse periodicity >= frame trigger delay + frame periodicity.

However, for some reason, I still cannot trigger frames reliably in Mmwave Studio. Sometimes the DCA1000EVM just doesn't capture any data at all, even after pressing DCA1000 ARM and Trigger Frame in Mmwave Studio.

Is the sync_in signal voltage okay at 3.3V or should it be 5v? Any other help would be appreciated!

    Thank you.

  • Hello Kukhokuhle,

       Thanks for the confirmation.

For new question you need to raise new thread, This will help other who are facing similar problem would be able to find the solution.

    Thanks and regards,

    CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.

  • Hello Chethan,

But I just said I am unable to do so. The TI website just keeps sending me around in loops. It says I do not have a vaild email address in my TI account. But of course I do, otherwise I would not have been able to ask the original question.

May you please take a moment to look at my question and help me please. Thanks.

  • Hello Kukhokuhle,

TI blocks any personal email ids (for example gmail), one need to use the company or university official mail ids.

If you are able to post this thread, then you have all the credential are set right, You should post the question similar to this thread.

Next time for any questions use new thread.

Trigger select should be Hardware instead of software, You could select in mmWave studio.

While using hardware trigger one has to follow additional timing requirements as shown below.

Please ensure above timing constraints are met.

    Thanks and regards,

    CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.

  • Hi Chethan,

Thank you for your kind response. I was able to resolve my issue.

The problem is that I was triggering the icboost with 3.3Vpp Not 5Vpp.

Don't you think a pdf detailing this process would come in handy? It is really difficult to set the whole hardware trigger process up. Firstly, one does not know that they should remove a certain resistor and solder another in place (one learns about this in the forums). Then one struggles to figure out what voltage sync_in signal should be and what the timing requiremens should be.

    Thanks.
