MMWAVEPOEEVM: How to use

Part Number: MMWAVEPOEEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843ISK, , MMWAVEICBOOST, UNIFLASH, MSP432E401Y

Hello everyone,

I have purchased a MMWAVEPOEEVM to use with IWR6843ISK  and MMWAVEICBOOST. Is there any detailed description available reagrding how to use this in the existing labs?

Thanks in advance.

Thank and regards,

Aleena N A

  • Hello Aleena,

Have you taken a look at the MMWAVEPOEEVM's users and quick start guide?

Here are the links to the respective documents :

    MMWAVEPOEEVM Power-Over-Ethernet Solution User's Guide (Rev. A)

mmWave POE EVM quick start guide (ti.com)

Let me see if I can find something else to guide you through the labs.

    Regards,

    Ishita

  • Hello Ishita,

I didn't get what I was looking for. I want to know how this is connected to PC for obtaining the data and how the device is powered over ethernet. How it can used in the existing lab such as people counting demo ?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Aleena N A

  • Aleena,

Below is the image which shows the connectivity of various hardware.

You could run the OOB demo on the mmWave sensor, Demo output comes out on the UART pins.  These signals are routed to MMWAVEPOEEVM's through the MMWAVEICBOOST board through the boosterpack connector.

MMWAVEPOEEVM has the MSP432 device which receive these UART signals through the boosterpack connector.

Also MMWAVEPOEVM is connected to PC through ethernet to PC using RJ45 connector. One need to connect ethernet through the power sourcing equipment. In the MMWAVEPOEVM circuits are present to extract the power from RJ45 connector and derives the 5V supply that is needed to power up the MMWAVEICBOOST and IWR6843ISK EVM.  By using appropriate jumpers (As given the User guide provided above) on the boosterpack connectors in the MMWAVEICBOOST board such that entire system could be operated from the power over ethernet itself.

System is designed such that both data, control and power could be delivered through the Ethernet cable. One need to modify/develop the code in MSP432 to receive the data from the UART port and stream through the ethernet interface.

  • Hello Chethan,

I am a bit confused. I will explain what I have understood. I think first I have to flash the MMWAVEPOEEVM using Uniflash(but I didn't find related to flashing the MMWAVEPOEEVM). And then we will connect to MMWAVEICBOOST. But after that I didn't understand how to configure MMWAVEPOEEVM to source power. Please help me to understand this.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Aleena N A

  • Hello,

You need to flash the QSPI flash in the RF board using Uniflash. For flashing the board using MMWAVEICBOOST board you could refer to below training

    https://training.ti.com/hardware-setup-mmwaveicboost-and-antenna-module?context=1128486-1139154-1147568

Please follow below userguide guide procedure.

    https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swru550a/swru550a.pdf

Please note the jumper and switch settings as provided in the userguide.  This is to ensure that MMWAVEPOEEVM is configured to source power through the RJ45 connector (J8).

POE power is generated through the DCDC converter/Flyback converter on the MMWAVEPOEEVM board and supplies to the MMWAVEICBOOST board through the boosterpack connectors. From the same boosterpack connector control and data is also transferred to MMWAVEPOEEVM board where MSP432 device exists and bidirectional communication is established between the mmWave device and MSP432.

Customer need to flash the MSP432 with the appropriate code so that it could received the processed mmwave data from the UART ports and send it to ethernet ports.  On the Ethernet port PSE need to be connected so that power could be sourced and MMWAVEICBOOST, MMWAVEPOEEVM or RF board doesn't need any other external power supply other than power supplied through the RJ45 connector.

    Thanks and regards,

    CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.

  • Hello Chethan,

Okay, I understand. Again one doubt to flash does the device has to be connected in the above shown way with MMWAVEICBOOST and antenna connected or just the MMWAVEPOEEVM? In the documentation, they are saying,

"To download an application to the MSP432E401Y MCU connect USB cable to J14 and ensure Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) jumpers on J13 are placed. Using unflash program the EXP432E401Y. For more information, see the UniFlash v4 Quick Guide wiki."

Which file has to be flashed?

. This is the window appears when I connect the MMWAVEPOEEVM for flashing.

    Thanks and regards,

    Aleena N A

  • Aleena,

There are two processor in the system one mmWave sensor which has the processor that needs to be flashed using the training video shown.

    https://training.ti.com/hardware-setup-mmwaveicboost-and-antenna-module?context=1128486-1139154-1147568

Second is the MSP432E401Y MCU which also need to be flashed as you have indicated. One need to develop MSP432 application code for this purpose. You could explore MSP432 demo code and modify for the POE application and then that need to be flashed using above Uniflash tools. We do not have readymade POE demo application code.

    Thanks and regards,

  • Hello Chethan,

Okay. For the one that has shown in the video, I have flashed it with the long-range people detention bin file. Is it okay? Or have to flash it with another file?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Aleena N A

  • Hello Aleena,

Yes, that is also fine, in that binary, processed data would come on the MSS LOGGER (UART TX pin) that need to be connected to UART Rx on the MSP432 and correspondingly you need to develop MSP432 code to receive and send it over ethernet ports.  If you need data to be available on SPI ports then you may have to modify the long-range people detention code to send the processed data over SPI ports and MSP432 application code also need to be developed accordingly. Hence it depends upon your application needs requirements.

    Thanks and regards,

    CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.

  • Hello Chethan,

When we executed a sample program MAC address was asked and also for flashing MAC address is required. From where I will get that?

    Thanks and regards,

    Aleena N A

  • Hello Aleena,

This is a new question, Please raise a new E2E post under MSP432 device family.

This would help E2E community to find the answers to the problems.

    Thanks and regards,
