OPT3101: OPT3101 AFE (Photodiode) considerations

Part Number: OPT3101
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-010077

Hello,

we are planning to build a ToF system, based on the OPT3101.

Some initial tests were done with the OPT3101 EVAL board. It seems that the photodiode and good layout can make a significant difference to the received signal.

So far i could not see a comparison of other photodiodes, so I assume that the SFH213 or the SFH2400 with a lense are good choises for the system.

We want to build our own system, and a few questions came up:

  1.  on the EVAL board a 0201 capacitor is used. Is this for mechanical issues only, or does this have a electrical benefit (impedance) - how critical is the specific type of capacitor?
  2. One of the other evaluation boards (TIDA-010077) has a negative voltage (-3.3V) for the photodiode. As I understand it, this reduces the capacitance, but increses the dark current.
What are the trade offs of using one or the other? Should we have an option to use AVSS or -3.3V ?

Thank you
