TMAG5231: Inquire about output timing.

Part Number: TMAG5231

Hi TI experts,

In the customer's application, the magnet passes over the sensing IC(TMAG5231) every 0.1 second.

Since the sampling rate spec of TMAG5231 is 50ms, it is expected that the proximity of the magnet can be output every 0.1 second.

Please give me your opinion.

Thank you.

Downey Kim.

  • Downey,

Thanks for your question.  This depends on the state of the magnetic field during the sampling time of the device

With tsample = 60 us, the magnetic field being observed must exceed BOP to be properly detected.  With the magnet passing the sensor at 100 ms intervals, there will be two samples taken during that time.  However, if the field does not exceed BOP during the active sample time then it is possible to miss the event.

The likelihood of a missed event can be reduced by increasing the magnetic field strength observed by the sensor by either placing the sensor very close to the passing magnet or by using a magnet with a stronger magnetic field.  For instance, if we were anticipating a somewhat sinusoidal input pattern at the sensor with a peak value of 4 mT, then we would have a very short time span where the field exceeds BOP.  If the field were 40 mT, then the length of time where the input field is greater than BOP increases dramatically.

    Thanks,

    Scott
