DRV5011: How to measure 3 phase induction motor speed using DRV5011ADDMRR hall effect sensor.

We are developing a product for condition monitoring (Predictive maintenance ) of motor,
We intend to measure the speed of the three-phase induction motor just by mounting the wireless device on the 3 phase induction motor.

Can anyone tell below things-

  1. Is DRV5011 is the correct selection for our application.?
  2. Is there any firmware guide of this sensor that will guide with APIs to measure the actual speed of 3ph induction motor?
  3. Do you recommend any other sensor for this application?
  4. Is there any development board available for this?please suggest.

    Thank you for your interest in TI products.

    Are you interested in using the Hall sensor for rotary encoding or motor commutation? What is the typical speed of this motor in your application?

    A Hall-effect latch is the correct type of hall sensor for these types of applications and we have application notes on using these devices for rotary encoding as well as motor commutation.

    The DRV5011 is a good selection for motor commutation. For rotary encoding I would recommend the TMAG5110 or TMAG5111 to simplify your design. 

    We do not have any APIs, but we do have the DRV5011EVM available as well as the TMAG511xEVM. We also have reference designs for BLDC motors which I will link below.

    We intend to make a device, which will measure the RPM of the 3-phase induction motor just by mounting it on the motor as shown in the below image.
    (We are not focusing on any BLDC motor application)

    Rpm Measurement on Induction motor

    The sensor should measure the speed of 2 HP to 1000 HP 3-phase induction motor.
    Motor speed varies from 400 rpm to 3600 rpm.

    Some doubts-

    1. Will  DRV5011EVM as well as the TMAG511xEVM be suitable for speed measurement if it is mounted on the housing of the Induction motor?
    2. Any reference document which specifically focuses on RPM measurement of 3 phase induction motor using TI hall effect sensor or magnetometer Sensor?
    3. Do you suggest any other sensor which will be suitable for all the above requirements?

  • We do not have any reference designs that specifically focus on induction motors.

    The concern I have with using the magnetic field generated by the motor to trigger the Hall-effect latch, is that the magnetic field is so complex. I am not sure if there would be adequate change in the field to fall below the Brp (release point) and then rise to Bop (operating point). If it does not trigger and release, it would not accurately track the rpm.

    I would recommend placing a ring magnet on the shaft and using the Hall-effect latch for rotary encoding and measuring the rpm externally. You could use two DRV5011 devices or one 2D latch. The TMAG5110 offers the digital output independently for each axis and the TMAG5111 offers two independent digital outputs giving a speed and direction calculation.
