FDC2112-Q1: Accuracy

Part Number: FDC2112-Q1

Hi team,

My customer has a question about this part. The datasheet talks about the option for an internal or external clock. Are external clocks, in general, more accurate than internal clocks?

Also, the ideal range of capacitance readings for their application is 50 to 100 pF +- 10fF.

Are there recommendations on how they might achieve this accuracy? Would this be an example where it is preferable to use the external oscillator?

  • Hello,

External clocks generally have better performance over temperature and are recommended for higher precision applications. For this application, they may get the desired resolution with the internal clock but it would be better to use an external.

Aside from the clock choice, to achieve a 10fF resolution, they may have to increase the RCOUNT setting which will also decrease the sample rate.

    Best Regards,
