DRV5032: Affect of Charge Buildup

Hey team,

I was wondering how surface charge buildup from static electricity on the cover of a product would affect the readings of the DRV5032? The distance between the cover and DRV5032 is a couple of mm away.

Do we have any documentation or white papers on this? Or even just an opinion?

This is a great question. In order to observe any magnetic field from a static charge, the electric field produced by the charge would need to be moving relative to the sensor. So, it's quite unlikely that charge on the plastic housing could create any magnetic field observable by your sensor.

Makes sense! My contact wanted me to confirm that this means they should not expect any charge build up on the metal element within the DRV5032. I would say yes, but wanted a quick second opinion.

I don't think it would be possible for there to be a charge build up on the hall element if the e-field generated by the static electricity moves relative to the drv5032

Cameron,

Correct, there should be no charge build up on the element. In fact, the Hall-effect operates by forcing a current through the conductive element, so we should not be an issue.
