PGA460PSM-EVM: Why PGA460 use LIN

Part Number: PGA460PSM-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA460, SN65HVDA100-Q1, BOOSTXL-PGA460

Hi Sir

I am really confuse about OWU/OWI/LIN interface about PGA460.

Could you help to verify below question?

I saw the Interface type  description of PGA460  is  UART / USART, TCI (Time Command Interface), OWU (One-Wire UART)

But I saw in PGA460PSM-EVM User's Guide show the inferface is OWI .

Q1. Is OWI Bus same as OWU?

Q2. Why LIN Transceiver SN65HVDA100-Q1 been used for OWI BUS?

Thanks

Qin

  • One more question is:

Is the TCI interface a proprietary protocol of Ti?I can't find much information on Google

  • Hi Qin,

OWI is just a general term to refer to the one wire interfaces (OWI) , specifically the one-wire UART(OWU) and time control interface (TCI).  Both of these interfaces use the IO pin of the PGA460.

The last post of the below thread has more information on the TCI and OWU interfaces, which should address the rest of your questions:

    Thanks for your suggestion.

1.Do you know the max distance for OWU/TCI/LIN? Ithink It should be rate to data rate(Low datarate is more longer).

Lin is 40m (20kbps),What about OWU if we run with 115200 or 9600?Same question for TCI.

2.Do you know the voltage level of OWU/TCI/LIN?  It seems They can support up to ~30V in PGA450&PGA 460 datasheet.

I knew Maxim have lots OWI sensor, the IO voltage is <6V,In Wiki,  ==> A 1-Wire network is a single open drain wire with a single pull-up resistor. The pull-up resistor pulls the wire up to 3 or 5 volts.

But PGA460 referent design,The OWU IO Voltage is to  12V(Pull-up).Are there any limit on IO levels for OWU/TCI/LIN?

3.Description of OWI data rate in Wiki  is:  standard mode->16.3Kbps ,Overdrive mode->143kbps

Does it mean we can run with uart Baud rate ,Like 115200,57600,28800,19200? Or OWI have two speed only: one is 16.3Kbps,the other is 143Kbps?

    Same Question for OWU/TCI.

4.PGA460 Referent design:  One LM2903PW are used for OWI Transceive.

Could we use same design(as below)  as LIN Transceive for costdown (Replace SN65HVDA100-Q1 with LM2903PW)?

    Thanks

    Qin

  • Hi Qin,

    Please see below:

    1. We have not characterized the maximum supported cable length. The length will depend on the value of the pull-up resistor on the IO pin, the OWU baud rate, device's supply voltage, and the F/m rating of the cable used.  The below post has more information on this: https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors-group/sensors/f/sensors-forum/873338/pga460-q1-how-far-can-io-signal-be-transmitted-i-want-to-add-a-long-wire-about-2-5m/3231604
    2. The OWI options are referenced to the VPWR voltage rail, so it can be referenced from 6 to 28 V, depending on what is the voltage of VPWR:
    3. The OWI term we use in the PGA460 datasheet is referring to the TCI and One-Wire UART options of the device, which use the IO pin of the PGA460.  It is not the one-wire communication protocol that you sent information about.   The One-Wire UART option of the PGA460 can specifically work with the baud rates you mentioned if you use the OWI transceiver circuit on the BOOSTXL-PGA460 EVM.  You can also use the SN65HVDA100-Q1 instead if the baud rate is no more than 19.2k.  Also, please note that the OWU is an alternative to LIN.  OWU is a simplified version of the LIN interface and excludes items such as the break field and much of the other LIN padded frames.
