TMP235: TMP235

Part Number: TMP235

Hi,

I am looking at the target applications of TMP235. Can it be used to sense the busbar temperature? I am planning to use a metal clad pcb to place this sensor and then placing this pcb on top of the busbar! please share if you have any articles regarding this tpoic.

  • Hi Swetcha,

Yes absolutely the TMP235 can be used with a metal clad pcb to sense the busbar temperature. Since the busbar you are measuring is at a high voltage, and as the TMP235 is rated for a 5V max input voltage, it is important to protect the device by using some types of thermal epoxy and making sure that the creepage and clearance tolerances are met.

An aluminum PCB can work well for this application. I would suggest keeping the pcb as small as possible, due to the higher thermal dissipation characteristics of aluminum. If possible, I'd recommend using an Aluminum Flex PCB as this would get you the best thermal conductivity.

We also have general PCB layout design considerations for surface mount devices and more information on the different types of heat transfer in this app note.

  • Hello Jalen,

Many thanks for your explanation. It makes sense to use a pcb with high thermal conductivity as the busbar heat needs to be felt by the sensor IC as accurately as possible.

I believe the type of application I am looking at will come under section 3 in the app note i.e., component temperature measurement. I am new to pcb design considerations especially when it is this application. are you able to share any anime or document for designing the pcb of tmp235 considering isolation aspects as well! thanks in advance

    Cheers

  • Hi Swetcha,

I don't believe we have any layout design tool related content specifically, but take note of what is mentioned in the TMP235 datasheet, section 10.2.

Other resources than the app note I've provided can be this additional How to Monitor Board Temperature app note. You can also check out our precision labs training video here where it is discussed further.
