AWR1843: Wall detection and parking assistance

I test my AWR1843boost with automotive mrr demo in below situations:

AWR1843Boost is against wall, the distance between device and wall is 1~2 meters, radar is static.

However, it seems radar doesn't show detected objects in the TLV.

From the reply of this question https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors-group/sensors/f/sensors-forum/1107002/awr1843-does-radar-detect-moving-objects-easier-than-static-objects, I understand the difficulty of detecting static objects.

But I think the ability of detecting the static objects is important, for example the vehicle is parking, the driver should know the obstacles before he start moving the vehicle. Is AWR1843 able to do that?

  • Hi,

The radar is able to detect static objects. However it depends on the range and type of object.

I recommend you run the mmWave SDK demo and view the Range Profile. Move the sensor closer and away from the wall to identify the detection from the wall. This analysis should help you understand if the detection is not strong enough or if there is too much noise in the scene.

You can also experiment by placing a strong reflector on the wall, for example taping a piece of aluminum foil. This will help give you a reference

    thank you
