[FAQ] TMAG5328: How to support using a resistor adjustable switch (TMAG5328) and a generic switch with the same PCB footprint?

Part Number: TMAG5328

How to support using a resistor adjustable switch (TMAG5328) and a generic switch with the same PCB footprint?

  • The  TMAG5328 is a very unique Hall effect switch in a sense that its threshold or BOP is not set at the factory but rather can be set dynamically in the application by selecting the desired value with an external resistor. The threshold is directly proportional to the value of this resistor allowing the user to set the threshold anywhere from 2mT to 15mT. For more information on how to set the variable threshold on this device, see our application note Implementing Programmability and Diagnostics With the TMAG5328.

A platform type of development can have multiple board where each board requires a different threshold. The TMAG5328 can be used on all boards and different resistors can be used on each of them in order to set the threshold to fit each specific mechanical requirement.

In some systems it might be easier or more cost effective to not use this specific device but instead use a generic Hall effect switch. The TMAG5328 offers the flexibility to be replaced by a generic switch while keeping the same landing pattern. In other cases, however, it is advantageous to remain with the TMAG5328 in all boards allowing a single device to be used thus making the AVL (approved vendor list) more manageable.

In the below example the same landing pattern is used for both the  TMAG5328 and a standard switch like the TMAG5231 or DRV5032. In the case of a standard switch the resistor can be removed as the threshold is already predefined.

Land pattern suggested for both packages are different. We recommend to use the following unified land pattern that can be used for both DBV and DBV packages. This unified land pattern is essentially using the DBV pattern with a 0.4mm extension of the pads.

    Best regards
