FDC2114: Is it ok to put a TVS between the sensor and LC ?

Part Number: FDC2114

Hi team,

My customer use the FDC to measure the liquid level of a plastic tube which my has the static electricity. That high voltage will reset the chip. So they want add a TVS  between the sensor and LC to release the static electricity. Will this influence the detection of level since the TVS may introduce additional Capacitance? Do you have any solution to  eliminate static electricity?

Thanks a lot

Matthew

  • Hello Matthew,

The added component can add capacitance but you may be able to account for this in your measurement. If you are adding a TVS diode here, I would recommend additional testing to ensure it does not impact the capacitive measurement. You will want to make sure that over multiple units, there is not a difference in the measurement across builds due to the additional component.

Alternatively, you could implement some of the EMI filtering techniques in this app note: EMI Considerations for Inductive Sensing. Even though it is targeted at inductive sensing, you can apply the same filtering techniques to this device.
