AWR1443BOOST: AWR1443Boost Field of view

Part Number: AWR1443BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1443,

Hello,

I would like to ask you that how much is field of view of the radar. Or I will ask you another way: in what maximum degree can radar detect objects?

(in vertical and also in horizontal plane)

Or diferently said: what is sensing / measuring (or evaluation) angle of the radar?

I was also trying to find these informations in datasheet, but unsuccessfully.

So I really hope that you will answer my question or you would recommend me where can I find the answer to my question above.

Thank you

  • Hi Robert,

The field of view you are referring to is an antenna characteristic and depends on the antenna design. For the AWR1443, you can look at the antenna pattern in the EVM user guide below.

  • Hello,

I already did that, but I still don't understand that figure, would you explain me that asap please? I just need degrees when it detect a object in vertical and in horizontal way. Nothing else.

    Thank you

    Robert

  • Hi Robert,

The figure there shows the gain obtained by the antenna over the 2D plane in sight. The signal strength at the farther angles drops making it difficult to estimate the angle accurately, if at all. The field of view, in a sense, is the range of angles across which a strong signal can be obtained. Following the same, when an angle FFT is performed, only angles over a preset field of view range (say -60 to +60 degrees) are chosen and the rest are dropped. This is what one can interpret from the figure.

Typically, the AWR1443BOOST has an azimuth FoV of ±60 degrees and elevation FoV of ±15 degrees.

  • Hi,

So, basically you say that, when an angle FFT is performed, values below antenna gain 0 Db are all dropped? Am I right?

Then these objects below 0 Db don't show in X-Y Scatter plot in Visualizer?

    Thank you,

    Robert

  • Hi Robert,

The objects are not dropped based on gain but rather on the FFT bin to angle mapping. The same can be observed in the Visualizer.

You can follow the cfg below in the SDK to see how it is done.
