TMP63: Monitoring temperature of the Industrial Motor for condition monitoring application with TMP63

Part Number: TMP63
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP127, , TMP127-Q1, TMP464, TMP61

Hello Community,

We are selecting lower-cost alternatives for measuring the temperature of the Industrial motor's bearing housing & casing.

We are tempted to use TMP63 or TMP127 and have a tentative plan to enclose this sensor into a sealed SS probe. Can someone from the community help us understand if this is a valid use case, or are we missing something obvious here?

Application requirements:

Temperature range: 0 to 90'C with some events (<5%) of 140'C
Accuracy: +/-1% total
Environment: Mounted on Industrial Motor
Expected Life: 20,000 Hours atleast

Kindly help us with any other cost-optimized RTD reference design or integrated solutions that can help achieve this application.

Looking forward to your insights.

Regards.

  • Hi Shreeneet,

Thank you for posting to the Sensing forum.

Both the TMP63DYA and TMP127-Q1 will meet your temperature range and accuracy needs. It is possible to mount these SMT parts on a small PCB and place the board inside the probe. Another option is to use a device such as the TMP61LPG, which comes in a TO-92 package and can be placed inside the probe housing, similar to the image below:

    From the TMP6x Datasheet:

For details regarding RTD replacement, we recommend the RTD Alternative Measurement Methods application note.

  • Hello Nicole,

Thank you for your prompt & valuable response.

Can we use the TMP6131ELPGMQ1 for an application that may have frequent 140'C temperatures (~25% of the time) other times the system shall be at 65-90'C?

I am unsure cause the Product page of the TMP127-Q1 sensor mentions type to be "Local".

    Regards

  • Also, can we simply Calibrate TMP6131ELPGMQ1 on 2 points - 50'C & 80'C?

This reference outlines 33 measurement points, which shall not be possible for our use case.

  • Hi Shreeneet,

Can we use the TMP6131ELPGMQ1 for an application that may have frequent 140'C temperatures (~25% of the time) other times the system shall be at 65-90'C?

This will be fine, as the TMP6131ELPGMQ1 has an operating temperature range of -40 to 170 °C.

The TMP127-Q1 is a local SPI temperature sensor. This means that there is no remote temperature sensing functionality. If you are interested in remote temperature sensors we have a portfolio of devices that have local and remote channels here.

    Also, can we simply Calibrate TMP6131ELPGMQ1 on 2 points - 50'C & 80'C?

Yes, the linearity of the TMP6x family allows single point calibration. The application note you referenced is discussing the process for creating a polynomial from scratch. For most applications the user can refer to our Thermistor Design Tool, which is able to automatically generate the polynomial.

    Best regards,
    Nicole

  • Hello Nicole,

Can we use TMP464 to monitor 4 x TMP6131ELPGMQ1 for temperature monitoring?

The TMP6131ELPGMQ1 sensors shall be placed at an average distance of 0.5 to a maximum of 1m away from the monitor.

Can you suggest some suitable reference designs that can help us convert up to 2 to 4 channels of TMP6131ELPGMQ1 sensors into I2C serial output that we can interface with our MCU? Alternatively, if any reference design exists for TMP6131ELPGMQ1 to ADC suitable voltage range, it would greatly help.

We are creating a low-cost condition monitoring platform for Micro & Small Industry owners in India, reliability & low cost are of paramount importance.

  • Hi Shreeneet,

The TMP61 is not compatible with the TMP464. Our remote temperature sensors are designed to work with either discrete transistors or substrate transistors built into processor chips, FPGAs, and ASICs.

For monitoring 2 to 4 remote temperatures I would recommend using the TMP464 with remote diodes.

    Best regards,
    Nicole

  • Hello Nicole,

We have selected the TMP6131ELPGMQ1 for measuring Bearing & Housing Component Temperatures up to 160'C in an industrial environment, alongside our vibration measurement channel.

Could you please provide insights on the maximum allowable distance between the TMP6131ELPGMQ1 sensor and the ADC when using 24AWG STP cables? Our application requires a distance of up to 2 meters between the ADC and the TMP6131ELPGMQ1 sensor. Additionally, do we need to implement a Low Pass Filter (LPF) in this setup to enhance the performance?

We would greatly appreciate your recommendations for a precision team's reference design that ensures a robust implementation and expedites our design process.

Thank you for your valuable assistance.

  • Hi Shreeneet,

We do not have data to specify the max allowable cable length in a TMP6131 application. This would depend on the capacitance of the wire and other environmental conditions. For 2 meters I would recommend a filter, as shown in Figure 9-5 of the TMP63 datasheet. The E2E post linked below provides further details on implementing a filter:

    Best regards,
    Nicole

  • Hello commuity,

Summarizing our use case with TMP6x sensors as follows:

    1. SNIA054 is s good reference for use cases of TMP6x family: https://www.ti.com/lit/wp/snia054/snia054.pdf

    2. These are possible enclosures for using TMP6x sensors, preferable is TO-92 package.

    3. TO-92 is a versatile package for adopting to different enclosures for robust use in harsh environments.

    4. We can reliably use lengths of up to 2m between the sensor to the MCU provided we perform one-time calibration using a single reference to maximize the accuracy of the entire system.

We choose the TMP6131ELPGMQ1 as it offers the maximum 170'C range in TO-92 package.
