TMCS1108: Can TMCS1108 measure 10uA to 3A?

Part Number: TMCS1108
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA226, INA236, INA238, INA228, AMC1350, INA310A

Hi team,

I want to know can TMCS1108 measures 10uA to 3A. (positive and negative both)

If not, What would you suggest about a small current measurement?

INA+ISO OP? thanks

  • Hi Jimmy,

Thank you for your post. The TMCS1108 can measure +/-10A as you mentioned.

Depending on your system needs, (output swing, supply voltage, etc.) the variant that may work for you is the TMCS1108A3B with a sensitivity of 200mV/A.

Section 10.2.2 Detailed Design Procedure is a great walkthrough of a design with +/-20A measurement range and an available 5V supply.

Can you share what your design requirements are and what available supplies you have?

    Best Regards,

    Joe

  • Hi Joe,

I know can support up to 10A. but lower current is down to 10uA. so I am not sure even 10uA if can be mesurment.

I think need to use different gain to mesurment different current.

  • Hi Jimmy,

I missed the uA. Thank you for catching that and apologies for the mistake.

I would not use the TMCS1108 as the offset error is in the mA range and would not allow for accurate measurements in uA. We do have the new TMCS1123 with higher precision but this still may not meet your accuracy requirements even after calibration.

I would like to know what is driving your requirement for isolation.

If you need more precision than the TMCS11XX family then I would take a look at our high voltage INA devices such as the INA228, INA238, INA236, and INA226. The INA228 is a high precision device that can meet your needs.

Below are some reference designs that are similar to your application. Are any of the below implementations something that you could see using in you system? You had the right idea to use an INA with isolation for the uA range measurements :)

    https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-00528

Note that, if you follow any of these designs, make sure the the digital isolator you use works with the voltage logic levels of the INA you use (and note that many isolators have different specs for each side).

Please take a look at these options and ask any questions or ask for any clarification.

    Thank you for your patience,

    Joe

  • Hi Joe,

Thanks for sharing. Based on application considerations I will suggest customer use INA310A+AMC1350 and then into ADC. thanks

  • Hi Jimmy,

Please keep us updated on the design progress and reach out if you need additional support on this topic or any others.

    Best Regards,
