IWR1843BOOST: Best Example/Lab Demo for detecting small UAS/drones within 20-40 meters

Part Number: IWR1843BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWRL1432BOOST, IWR6843, AWR1642BOOST

Hello!

Hope everyone is having a great week.  I am just getting started with the mmWave radar labs and examples and was wondering which lab within the existing SDK's you'd recommend detecting small UAS/drones within 20-40 meters.  Capability of detecting faster moving targets (10-20 m/s) is desirable, bur really I just want maximum detectable range for RCS of small drones for now.

I am planning on demoing the Medium Range Radar and Short-Range Radar example projects to see how they do, but I would appreciate any other examples you'd recommend along with any prior experience on how to tweak the radar chirp settings to optimize results.  All measurements will be taken pointing at the sky in an open-air environment (i.e. no trees or other physical objects anywhere near antenna boresight.

I currently have:

IWR1843BOOST

IWRL1432BOOST

IWR6843 w/ MMWAVEBOOST

AWR1642BOOST

Thanks so much!  Have a great weekend.

Craig.

  • Hello.

I would start with the out of box demo for the 6843 and and 6432 devices, as we have some configurations for drone obstacle detections that you can start with.  These configurations were designed to detect obstacles at higher altitudes such as trees and small animals like birds, but can be extended to other drones as well.  It may require further tuning to optimize for drones themselves, but this would provide a great starting point in terms of a configuration.

    Sincerely,

    Santosh
