AWR1843AOP: Safety function inquiries related to functional safety

Part Number: AWR1843AOP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP87745-Q1, AWR1843

Tool/software:

we are trying to satisfy the Diagnostic coverage medium level while preparing ISO13849-1. To do so, the Safety Mechanism must be implemented more than 90%.

The questions below are based on the AWR1843aop safety manual.

<Hardware>

1. Is it mandatory to apply the external temperature sensors listed in the safety manual? Even if they are not applied, will it not affect the FMEDA Diagnostic coverage?

2. If I use the internal watchdog function of PMIC (LP87745-Q1) without using an external watchdog, will it not affect the FMEDA diagnostic range?

<Software>

1. Looking at 'Table 8-1 Monitoring and Diagnostics' in the AWR1843AOP data sheet (awr1843aop.pdf), there are diagnostic and monitoring functions that can be enabled via API. If all of these functions are enabled, can the Diagnostic Coverage of the 'AWR1843_AOP_FMEDA.xlsm' document be satisfied, or what will the DC value be?

<etc.>

1. Can you please send me the FMEDA of the AWR1843AOP I received as an editable file? The file I received currently does not allow me to edit most of the data.

  • Hi,

    Please find my comments as below.

    If all the features are implemented, you will meet the coverage as listed in the FMEDA sheet. It is only when you skip certain features that coverage will change.

    1. Can you please send me the FMEDA of the AWR1843AOP I received as an editable file? The file I received currently does not allow me to edit most of the data.

    An editable file is not shared with any user. It is a locked file that is shared. The expectation from TI is that all the safety functions as mentioned in the safety manual will be implemented by the user. If the user wants to skip certain safety features, then it is a requirement on their side to analyze the impact and change the final FIT rates based on that analysis. TI can provide inputs for the analysis but not more than that.

    Thanks,

    Pradipta.

  • Please also answer the remaining questions.

  • 1. Is it mandatory to apply the external temperature sensors listed in the safety manual? Even if they are not applied, will it not affect the FMEDA Diagnostic coverage?

    Whether it is mandatory to apply the external temperature sensors listed in the safety manual depends on the specific requirements of the safety standard (ISO 13849-1) and the safety manual itself.

    2. If I use the internal watchdog function of PMIC (LP87745-Q1) without using an external watchdog, will it not affect the FMEDA diagnostic range?

    Using the internal watchdog function of the PMIC LP87745-Q1 without an external watchdog might not be acceptable and might affect FMEDA diagnostic coverage, but it depends on the specific implementation, diagnostic coverage requirements, and certification standards. It's crucial to carefully evaluate these factors to ensure that the chosen approach meets the safety requirements of the application.
