IWRL6432: Connecting with ESP32

Part Number: IWRL6432
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843,

Tool/software:

Hi,

We want to connect sensor with ESP32. The requirement we have is to accurately detect person with cm level accuracy upto 0-4 meters range. I am looking for FOV of 60 degrees both horisontal and vertifical.

Can you suggest best sensor available. I checked some of videos of IWRL6432BDBAAMFR and it seems its promising. Is there any other better option?

Thanks

Karunakar

  • Hello.

The IWRL6432 and the IWR6843 both have been used in people detection and both can support the 4 meter range requirements.  If low power is a requirement, I would recommend the IWRL6432 due to the low power architecture it supports.  Centimeter level accuracy for people tracking can be difficult inherently as the the minimum range resolution is about 3-5 cm and angular resolution of 29 degrees in azimuth and 58 degrees in elevation, but you can use other algorithms like capon beamforming to improve the angular resolution.

    Sincerely,

    Santosh

  • Thanks Santosh. How complex is it to connect IWRL6432 with ESP32 or any other similar boards. Can you share detailed document or link for HW as well SW setup

    IWRL6432BDQGAMF

Also, is the detection good in outdoor. with differen env conditions such as wind, sunlight, ..etc.  One more question, does the sensor can be kept 4-5 ccm above ground level for the detection.

    Thanks

I cannot comment specifically on the ESP32 as that is not a TI device; I would check on their forums if they have any reference material for that specific board.

However, we do have a reference design for a radar + wifi device which you can find here.  This is used for people tracking in both indoor and outdoor applications.

One more question, does the sensor can be kept 4-5 ccm above ground level for the detection.

It can be, but I would recommend pointing the sensor upwards so that you can detect more of the person as opposed to just around their knee level.  Ideally, having it around 1m would be best but you can test this out and see what height works best.

  • Hi,

Thank you, I will check the reference link you have shared. Is it possible to control distance as well FOV programmtically. I can see that it supports differnt voltages, does it supports 3.3 VIN.

As its having inbuilt MCU, i believe its straight forward to read the data from UART. How many data points can we expect in a second

    Thanks

  • Hello.

Is it possible to control distance as well FOV programmtically.

Yes.  Please refer to the SDK documentation for chirp/frame configuration commands as well as FOV and distance filtering.

I can see that it supports differnt voltages, does it supports 3.3 VIN.

For the digital components, it can support 3.3 VIO or 1.8 VIO.

This depends on your environment, RCS of your target, and the CFAR threshold you set for detecting an object.  You will have to test this out experimentally to determine the # of points that you get, and tune the chirp and processing chain parameters accordingly to meet your performance requirement.

    Sincerely,

    Santosh

  • One last question. I can see there are many sensor that starts with IWRL6432B. Around 4 sensors available. Which one do i have to choose for evaluation purpose as well for future production purpose

    Thanks

    Karunakar

  • Hello.

For evaluation, you can acquire the IWRL6432BOOSTEVM or the IWRL6432AOPEVM.  For production it will be up to you based on antenna design, performance, size/form factor, etc.

    Sincerely,

    Santosh
