Texas Instruments has a portfolio of light-sensitive products for your application!

For answers to common questions about optical products, please visit the Optical Sensors FAQ (also accessible via the FAQ button on the sidebar).

To help choose what kind of light sensitive product to use, let's look at our product offerings:

  • The OPT3001 has a digital I2C output, and has great matching to the human eye closely following the photopic response curve from ~400nm to ~700nm.  Because this part is a digital output, two sample rates are available, 100ms and 800ms.  For information on design implementation and limiting the field of view, please refer to Application Note (SBEA002).
    • The OPT3001EVM is available for sale in the TI.com estore.  For help debugging, please refer to the FAQ first.  The OPT3001 will also be available on the MK-II educational boosterpack (not available yet)
  • The OPT101 has response range that extends above and below the visible spectrum, from ~300nm to ~1100nm wavelengths.  It has a bandwidth of 14kHz, which varies with the gain selected (by a feedback network).
  • The OPT301 has a similar response range that extends from ~200nm to ~1100nm wavelengths.  It has a bandwidth of 4kHz, which varies with the gain selected (by a feedback network).
  • The IVC102is s switched integrating transimpedance amplifier, generally used to monitor very small photocurrents from photodiodes with an analog output.
    • TIPD176 shows a great solution for photodiode current measurement, and is an excellent starting point.

TI Application Note SLVA704 is an excellent reference for I2C questions.

For photodiode amplification and measurement with a digital output, low to high channel counts and various gains, please look into the DDC112, DDC114, DDC118, DDC316, DDC232, DDC264, and DDC1128 products.
