TDC1000-TDC7200EVM USB not recognized

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC1000, TDC7200EVM, TDC7200, MSP430F5529

I'm trying to use the TDM1000-TDC7200EVM board.  I'm running Windows 8, which from scanning other posts, may be why I'm not able to get USB recognition in the Windows Device Manager.  Initially, I plugged in the board and had the D4 power and D2 link LEDS illuminated yellow/green, and the device showed up in Device Manager in "Other" as an "MSP 430 Example" device.  I then held down SW1 and plugged in and went through the firmware upgrade process for v2.07 firmware.  It showed successful to the upgrade, but now I get D4 illuminated green, D2 link not illuminated, D3 illuminated orange, and the device shows up in the USB section of Device Manager as "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)".  No communication can be established with the board  until I can get it recognized by Windows.

Any recommendations on how I can get this device to be recognized by Windows?  Downgrading to Windows 7 isn't really an option, so I would probably have to get ahold of a separate machine.

  • Bob,

The main target platform for the TDC1000_TDC7200EVM GUI is Windows 7.

Our testing on Windows 8 is very limited. We have checked by disabling driver signature enforcement, the GUI works on Windows 8 platform.
I wonder if your install issue is connected to disabling driver signature enforcement. We followed the steps in the link below to do this on a windows 8 machine.

Then we could get the GUI and Driver working.

    Thanks,
    Vishy
  • Thanks for your quick response, Vishy.  I tried suggestions with Windows 8, but was not successful.  I now am trying on a machine running Windows 7.  I upgraded to the latest firmware v2.07 and was able to manually install the unsigned driver.  Now I get the following result:

I made sure that the driver was updated to most current.  Are there changes I need to make to the port settings?  Thanks.

  • Tried attaching a screen capture, but doesn't look like it worked. There is a yellow exclamation in the Ports section of Device Manager (it does list as TDC7200 EVM on Com 3). When I look at properties, it says "This device can not start (Code 10)".
  • Bob,

I think JPEG pictures easily attach. Others come as an enclosure to download.

    Regarding your issue, please
    Quit the GUI
With the board connected, open the device manager and find the device with yellow exclamation
Right-click and choose update driver software
    Browse and select C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\TDC1000_7200EVM\Firmware
This folder has the .inf file for TDC1000-TDC7200EVM.
Close the setup window when the installation is complete.
Restart the GUI, it should automatically connect and read all the registers.

Let me know if it works.

    Thanks,
    Vishy
  • Vishy:

I tried your suggestions above.  When I chose "update driver software" and selected the location of the firmware folder (containing a file called "TDC7200EVM_USB_Driver.inf" - the only .inf file in the whole TI folder), Windows 7 responds that "Windows has determined that the driver software for your device is up to date".  When I right click and show Properties for that port, I get the attached results.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, but same result.  Please let me know if you have other suggestions.  Thanks!

  • Bob,

I was thinking you are installing TDC1000-TDC7200EVM driver. or aree you are installing TDC7200EVM driver? The installation procedure is generally the same but I was referring to the firmware folder of the TDC1000-TDC72000EVM install instead of tDC72000EVM install folder.

The TDC7200EVM works with the MSP430F5529 Launchpad and looks like the driver is installed correctly. So under the device manager do you see all TDC7200 and MSP ports as below?

Assuming you have all the ports shown, as long as you have installed the TDC7200EVM GUI and not the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM GUI, you should be able to connect.

Otherwise, also check if you have admin permission on the windows 7 PC you are installing.

    Thanks,

    Vishy

  • I feel stupid now! I had accidentally installed the TDC7200EVM software and NOT the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM software. I uninstalled the 7200EVM, correctly installed the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM software, and can now toggle the LED on the board using the GUI. Thank you very much, and I will post in a separate thread if I have more questions!
