OPT9221: OPT9221 not stopping cleanly

Hi,

We are having issues stopping our OPT9221 based camera cleanly. Currently the camera is stopped by writing 1 to tg_dis (we do also drive the READY pin low, though though I don't think that would do anything adverse), then software resetting the chip. Nothing else is done to stop the stream. After 2-3 times of successfully starting, streaming data, then stopping, the OPT9221 appears to stop though the LEDs are still modulating; no further comms are possible over i2c after that and a hard reset is required to bring the chip back to life.

Is this something anyone has come across? This behaviour has only started since we switched from the OPT9220 to the OPT9221, is a different stop sequence required?

This is a known issue in firmware v0.23 and v0.26. We will provide you with an updated OPT9221 firmware offline that avoids the issue.

The same phenomenon sometimes happens in my side too, the firmware I used was v0.26, can you send me an updated opt9221 firmware too?

Anand was able to send us fw 0.27, but unfortunately it didn't fix it for us.

We do not currently have a released firmware version that solves this issue completely and are still working on the updated version for formal release.

Hi Anand,

Just an update on the v27/v26 firmware. We have abandoned the v27 that you sent us; apart from not fully solving our issues, it seemed to introduce additional problems when trying to set the modulation frequency.

However, we have found a fix for the stopping hang (or more of a workaround). The one thing to avoid seems to be calling TG_DIS to stop the camera capture. If we do this then - and in a very unpredictable fashion - the opt9221 will lock-up. So, instead of using TG_DIS, we simply write a 1 to the sw_reset register (h00). This stops everything immediately, and leaves the sensor in a fresh state (note that everything will need to be re-initialized though including CLK_MODE). It's a bit crude, but seems to work.

Hope this helps anyone else having this trouble.
