PGA460-Q1: Issues while using 200khz transducer

Hi,

I'm using PGA460 to measure the distance and I had a problem while using 200kHz transducer. The transducer that I'm using here: https://www.steminc.com/PZT/en/air-transducer-200-khz

Schematic:

Below is some images that I measured signal on the transducer output (P41 in schematic).

You can see in the echo dump data figure that it's hard to detect where is the echo pulse.

I've use the same circuit (with different value of C43 and C44) with 40kHz transducer and I can detect the echo pulse to detect the distance but it doesn't meet our requirement so we decide to try with 200kHz transducer but no luck. We don't think the problem come from the hardware since we can use with the 40kHz and 58kHz tranducer. Why would this happen?

another question is, is there any issues i put C43 and R41 in this way (CR) instead of RC?

I have tested the SMATR200H19XDA with the PGA460, and found it will work when using a different transformer. The problem is that the EVM provided transformer, the TDK EPCOS B78416A2232A003, has too high of a secondary inductance (3mH) in parallel to the 200kHz transducer. In addition, you do not need the C47 tuning cap of 1500pF or the R44 damping res of 2.7kOhm. These values are specific to the Murata MA58MF14-7N.

This new transformer I have experimented is still in the prototype phase, so I cannot share the transformer specifications or p/n. However, the SMATR200H19XDA can achieve a minimum distance of 5-7cm, and a maximum beyond 1m when paired with the proper transformer and PGA460. I will notify you once these high-freq transformer samples become available.

Keep in mind that the SMATR200H19XDA has a very focused beam (FOV). What are your minimum and maximum range requirements? Perhaps I can recommend an alternative transducer.

Thanks for the fast response, the range i would like to test is from 50 to 80cm, so I will say SMATR200H19XDA is a good transducer for my application? Or do you have a better recommendation?

If i would like to use SMATR200H19XDA, can you recommend me a better transformer that I can use and what is the components that i need to take care or values that I need to change?

Hi KH,
If you range is from 50-80cm, almost any transducer will work. Have you tried using the Murata transducers provided on the PGA460-Q1 EVM? The Murata MA58MF14-7N can reach downwards of 10-17cm, and the Murata MA40H1S-R can reach downwards of 12-20cm depedning on the voltage reference and preset drive conditions (pulse count, driver current limit).

If your range requirement is below 10cm, you can use either the high-freq range of transducers, such the SMATR200H19XDA, or use any bi-static transducer pair, which allocates one transducer as a dedicated transmitter, and the other as a dedicated receiver.

Dear Akeem,

I had remove away the RC as your recommend but the result is the same for 200khz. I am currently changed the transformer to N1342DEA-0008BQE=P3 – Murata.

Attached the signal which probe on INP pin.

Hi KH,

The N1342DEA-0008BQE=P3 transformer may not be compatible with the 200kHz transducer. The prototype transformer I used will now be publicly released as the TDK B78416A2386A003. TDK will have samples available on Digi-Key and Mouser soon. If you need samples sooner, please contact their sales support directly.

Here are some performance snapshots of the transducer driver signal, and the echo data dump performance when using the 200kHz Steminc SMATR200H19XDA transducer when targeting a 30cmx30cm sheet of cardboard. The minimum distance is about ~5-7cm. No passives are placed in parallel to the transducer.

Echo data dump sweep from ~5 to 60cm. The maximum distance is assumed to be +1m:

Hello Akeem,

I am interesting in ultrasonic ranging at frequency of 200kHz, so I found this interesting and useful post. I try to search TDK B78416A2386A003 transformer but apparently there is no one. Is there any news about this transformer. Is there any alternative transformer for 200kHz.

The transformer B78416A2232A003 is intended for 52kHz, can I use it with 40kHz ultrasonic transducer?

Yes, the low-freq TDK-EPCOS B78416A2232A003 transformer included with the PGA460-Q1 EVM is compatible with the majority of low frequency transducers between 30k-80kHz.

I need solution for ultrasonic ranging both for 40kHz and 200kHz ultrasonic sensors and if possible on same PCB. I believe that PGA460 is perfect for this. Can you tell me are the TDK-EPCOS B78416A2386A003 and TDK-EPCOS B78416A2232A003 share same footprint? What do you think about circuit difference using PGA60 for 40kHz and 200kHz?

Does Wurth Electronics has tranformer in same footprint as 750316928 component?

Both TDK-EPCOS transformers share the same footprint. The 750316928 is a bit smaller, but Wurth will be able to provide the exact dimensions.

Since TI has not fully evaluated a muxing solution for the transformer driven mode, you will need to populate the PCB with two separate PGA460 devices to drive the 40 kHz and 300 kHz sensors independently. You can then leverage the USART (or OWU) addressing to connect both devices to the same USART bus, enabling a single USART connector to the PCB.

Hi Akeem,

I don't need both frequencies at the same time. I am planing to use same PCB design, but with one set of components for 40kHz on one PCB, and with different set of component for 200kHz at second PCB. My question was, is the circuit the same for 40kHz and 200kHz if we exclude transformers?
I believe it is the same and i just need to make different firmware for both versions.

I understand now. Yes, the PCB trace and component layout will be identical for both the 40 kHz and 200 kHZ transformer-driven transducers. The only value difference will likely come from the optional tuning passives that are placed in parallel to the transducer to optimize/reduce the ringing-decay time. These tuning passives include the transformer tuning capacitor (C_Tune) and damping resistor (R_Damp). For details on these two passives, see the "PGA460 Ultrasonic Module Hardware and Software Optimization" AppNote section 3.4.

Depending on the specific high-freq transducer you use, you may not even require any tuning passives, so they would just be DNP placeholders for the high-freq PCB.

I just got my PGA460 EVM to do some test. If i want to do some measurement from 5cm to 80cm, what kind of setting i need to set in the GUI? I am using the default setting, it doesn't works, think the smallest distance i can measure is just 30cm. Need your advise what should i set to get the range? And what frequency will be the best for this range?

I am using everything from EVM kit and the transducer given as well.

There are two transducers on the EVM: the muRata MA58MF14-7N on the transformer driven, and the muRata MA40H1S-R on the direct driven.
The muRata MA58MF14-7N is a 58.5kHz transducer, and the muRata MA40H1S-R is a 40kHz transducer. Given the relation
↑ Frequency :: ↑ Resolution :: ↑ Narrower Directivity :: ↑ Attenuation :: ↓ Distance
the muRata MA58MF14-7N should be used for short range measurements. With the default components, the minimum ranging is limited to 20-30cm. To minimize the ranging of the TDK EPCOS B78416A2232A003 transformer and muRata MA58MF14-7N transducer combination, replace the parallel transducer tuning passives with a 680pF tuning capacitor (CTune) and a 10kΩ damping resistor (RDamp). This will enable sub-15cm ranging depending on the pulse count, center-tap voltage, and driver current limit.

For 5cm mono-static ranging, you will need to acquire a high-frequency transducer (180k-400kHz), or can use two low-frequency bi-static transducers. Please read through a similar post for details on the recommended register settings and example results after modifying the EVM for optimized short ranging with the muRata MA58MF14-7N : e2e.ti.com/.../2251561

Thanks for your advise, I am using the muRata MA58MF14-7N transducer. Yes, from the setting and evm you advise, I can measure from 0.28m to above 1.5m. Can I confirm with you, which one is the CTune and RDamp? Is it C15 and R38? If yes, I changed the value, but the measurable distance is still the same. I am using 58.6kHz for the frequency. Need your advice.

Note, object detection below 20cm will occur at the ringing-decay slope.

Can you share the details of your register settings (provide GUI generated .txt output file from Memory Map page) and your supply voltage?]
Can you share the echo data dump output for a no-object burst-and-listen command?

I am attaching (below) the complete memory config for the updated passive tuning values . Keep in mind that the echo data dump is unreliable at very short distance. For instance, when you use Preset 2 of this configuration, it will appear as though there is no change to the ultrasonic activity prior to 14cm. However, this is due to the DSP ramp-up and downsampling. The threshold comparator is able to register the actual echo down to 10cm when you enable the Ultrasonic Measurement Results output. Do not solely rely on the echo data dump for very short range evaluation.

I am using the regmap that you provided and run the test, i found that there is an offset around 10cm from the actual measurement versus the read back. Below is my setup, do let me know if there is any incorrect on my setup? When i trying to measure the 10cm, what i read back is 20cm. For the 5cm measurement, does it means that i need to use a higher freq transducer instead?

The Murata MA58MF14-7N will be limited to approximately 10cm object detection in mono-static mode. GUI version 1.0.0.8 contains an error in the time-of-flight to distance conversion by adding additional ~10cm to the actual distance. This conversion has been corrected in GUI version 1.0.0.9, which will be available on TI.com before the end of 10/21 (the GUI will automatically notify you of an update if connected to the Internet).

If you need 5cm detection, then you will need to use either a low-freq bi-static transducer pair, or a high-freq mono-static transducer.

Depending on the maximum range requirement, you can use either a bridge driver or transformer driver to excite the high-frequency transducer. You can start with the evaluation of your Steminc SMATR200H19XDA transducer in the half-bridge driver mode available on the PGA460 EVM. Based on your results, and if you need longer ranging, you can obtain a high-freq transformer. High-freq transformer options include:
1) TDK-EPCOS B78416A2386A003 transformer, contact TDK-EPCOS support at en.tdk.eu/.../product-inquiry
2) Wurth Electronics 750316928, contact the Wurth Electronics Midcom Inc. Headquarters at midcom@we-online.com

After I updated to 1.0.0.9, the distance that i read back is still having 10cm offset. May I know why will this happen? And is there any setting that I can set to compensate it?

There is no reason you should be seeing a 10cm offset. Can you try to replicate the following 30cm to 10cm short range results using the Murata MA58MF14-7N transducer in the transformer drive mode using the provided EVM modifications and GUI settings?

Hardware:

Place a 680pF tuning capacitor (CT) and 10kΩ damping resistor (RDamp) in parallel to the transducer. This will enable sub-15cm ranging depending on the pulse count, center-tap voltage, and driver current limit.

Power the BOOSTXL-PGA460 using an external power supply unit at 9V.

Dear Akeem,

When I enable the Ultrasonic Measurement Results, I can see the read back for distance is correct, but from the plot, i cannot see the peak that read back is correct, why this will happen?

May I know how to get this dump data as you shown?

Hi KH,

In your example screen shot, is the object actually at 9cm? The resolution within the decay profile will appear worse on the echo data dump plot due to the excessive downsampling to fit the profile in the EDD's 128 byte memory space. The ultrasonic measurement result is able to detect objects with greater resolution at its 1us sampling rate, so it can better detect objects within the decay profile.

To plot the echo data dump as I have shown, use the PGA460 GUI. Navigate to File --> Echo Data Dump Plotter --> (opens new window) --> Open File --> (opens windows explorer to select EDD files).
