TDC1000: tdc1000

Part Number: TDC1000
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA2357, LM2733

If I wanted to boost the signal from the TDC1000 to increase the signal (lets say a 5X increase) to get better sensing distance, is the OPA2357 amplifier a good choice? Is there a specific type of amplifier I should use for the square wave that the TDC produces, or am I better off just building my own amplifier circuit? I had read that amplification of square waves requires an amplifier with lots of bandwidth but don't know much more then that. I looked in the spec sheet and didn't see anything too specific. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

  • Hello,

I may be missing something, but it looks like that amplifier only has up to 5.5V supply voltage. The TDC1000 will do almost that much on its own (5.5V VDD = about 5.2V peak transmission voltage). I wouldn't recommend it simply because it doesn't seem to provide any additional voltage that the TDC1000 can't produce on its own.

Please check out the TDC1000-GASEVM (www.ti.com/.../tdc1000-gasevm). It is mostly the same as the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM, but includes a BSTEVM daughtercard that boosts the transmission voltage up to 30V peak. It uses an LM2733 boost converter to generate the voltage from the same supply as the TDC1000. The full schematic for the BSTEVM is included in the TDC1000-GASEVM user's guide here: www.ti.com/.../sniu026a.pdf. I suggest this as a starting point for developing a boosted circuit.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the ideal driving voltage for a transducer is a pure sine wave at the center frequency. A square wave output is simpler to implement in the circuit design of the TDC device, so that's why it was used. Don't concern yourself too much about preserving the higher frequency content in the square wave, since the most efficient power transmission is going to take place at the resonant frequency of the transducer.
  • Hello.
am also working with TDC1000 and proving a 5V supply voltage to TDC1000 but am not getting 5v peak to peak at TX pulses,i measured the pulses at TX pin through CRO it is Showing only 750mv. suggest me how you are getting 5V peak to peak.
  • Hi,
Am have a same what rashmi is facing. Am only getting 680mv Peak to peak. Please suggest me how to boost Tx pulses.

    Advance thanks
