AWR1642: Immersion gold

Part Number: AWR1642
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-01570

Hi

I have a question about the document TIDA-01570 ,do the  EVM's antennas surface use immersion gold  process?

And  how much is the thickness of the immersion gold?

Best Regards ,

  • Hello Monica,

For all mmWave application/designs immersion sliver/OSP surface finish process is recommended due to lower loss properties, Gold/ENIG process has higher loss. Silver alloy is very good conductor and close to that of copper.

Gold is less conductive than copper, so using this finish will result in a penalty in conductor loss, customer weigh depending upon their application this loss would be acceptable or not and based on decision need to be taken.

When PCB is exposed to environment with moisture content, oxidations are seen and you would see de-coloration. But this should not affect the mmWave frequency performance.
Most often actual product board will be inside the box/housing/Redome etc, hence should not be a problem.

We do not have the EVM/TIDA whose antenna surface use immersion gold process.

    Thanks,
    Raghu
  • Hello Raghu,

Thanks for your reply, that's really helpful for me, now I want to know the thickness of the immersion sliver.

    Thanks,
    Monica
