OPT3001: OPT3001 vs OPT3006 vs OPT3007?

Part Number: OPT3001
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPT3002, , OPT3006, OPT3007

Team,

The below post does provide explanation about OPT3001 vs OPT3002 but I have not found yet something specific for OPT3001 vs OPT3006 vs OPT3007:
https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensor/optical_sensors/f/989/p/631647/2332858#2332858

- Apart from the package what are the differences between OPT3001 vs OPT3006 vs OPT3007?
In term of solution cost is PICOSTAR more expensive to use than USON (PCB, handling, ..etc)?

- In case the application makes use an IR src what would be the best options to measure ambient light (in order to tune some LED backlight)?
Would OPT3001/6/7 have an advantage vs OPT3002 for this use case?

I assume that there are ways to mitigate the IR led influence on ambient light measurement (like doing calibration, protect mechanically the light sensor, ..etc).
Or would OPT3001/6/7 be a better fit in any case?

Thanks in advance,

Anthony

  • Hi Anthony,

OPT3001, OPT3006, and OPT3007 are the same except for the package. OPT3006 and OPT3007 have the same package, but OPT3007 has 4 active pins instead of 6.

Cost of manufacturing is higher for OPT3006/7. The picostar package has the sensor on the bottom requiring a hole to be cut in the PCB. There is a FoV simulator tool on the OPT3006 page that gives an idea, but the tolerance of the cutout and alignment of the IC over the hole needs to be precise. If these parameters are not controlled enough calibration will be required as each board can have a different attenuation. The OPT3007 only has 4 pins to allow the hole to be a little bigger, which eases the tolerances a bit.

Summary: between OPT3001, 6, 7 use OPT3001 unless you really need to small package offered by OPT3006/7. OPT3001,6,7 all have the same human eye response filter and IR rejection, whereas OPT3002 has no filter. Thus IR rejection is quite good on OPT3001,6,7 and not offered on OPT3002.

    Best,

    Alex
