IWR1642BOOST: Range of IWR1642 compared to IWR1443

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1443, IWR1642, , IWR1443BOOST

Hello,

I am able to achieve good accuracy and range with IWR1443. I am aware that IWR1642 has a powerful DSP and more internal memory but lesser sampling rate compared to IWR1443. Would I be able to achieve similar output with it? I am looking for a mm level accuracy and range upto 25m which I am able to achieve using IWR1443. The documents I have seen talk about low range measurement for IWR1642.

Prudhvi Sagar

  • Hi Prudhvi,

    1. I assume that you don't care about elevation information since IWR1642BOOST provides only 2D point cloud (X and Y). This is because ithas 2 TX antennas as compared to 3 on the IWR1443.

    2. You should be able to achieve 25m range on IWR1642. The IWR1642 based Traffic Monitoring Demo shows max range up to 120m . The best way to evaluate your scenario would be to plug-in your application requirements (max range, range resolution, max velocity etc) into mmWaveSensingEstimator with IWR1642 device selected. The sensing estimator will generate an error if your requirements violate the maximum sampling rate on the IWR1642 device.

    3. Also note that irrespective of the device, you may not be able to achieve mm level accuracy at 25m since accuracy depends upon SNR (besides range resolution and implementation factors such as FFT size) and you may not be able to achieve the required SNR at this distance. Please refer to the following thread for considerations related to accuracy:

  • Hello Nitin,

Thank you for the support. Yes I only require the 1D range measurement. How do I calculate/measure my SNR for a give configuration. Is there any relation between the signal amplitude observed in "High Accuracy Visualizer" and SNR? I was able to achieve better accuracy after placing a horn which significantly improved the signal strength in case of IWR1443BOOST. Can the parameters of "High Accuracy Demo"  for IWR1642 be tuned to achieve upto 25m as by default the parameters are given for achieving upto 3m only.

  • Hi Prudhvi,

The PeakValue that is part of the Range Profile in the High Accuracy Visualizer is a unit-less representation of SNR but is not equivalent to SNR.

The chirp parameters can be tuned for further distances, I'd recommend looking at the DE and DB versions of the chirp that are part of the 14xx High Accuracy Demo. DB is specced for up to 20 m while DE is good for up to 10 m with high number of samples.

    Cheers,
