TDC7201-ZAX-EVM: What changes to TDC7201-ZAK-EVM are required in order to use Common Start?

Part Number: TDC7201-ZAX-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC7201, MSP430F5529

Hi,

I'm trying to use the TDC7201 with Common Start.

This measurement mode seems to require some modification to the TDC7201 Evaluation Module.

Are the modifications documented somewhere?

By default, Common Start is not connected and R11 and R12 must be supplied.

In addition to populating R11 and R12, I think R2 and R9 should be reomved.

Now I measure 50ohms on the Common start, and when signal is attached to Common Start, I can see that signal on START_EXT1.

Unfortunately, TDC1 measurements have stopped working!

Q. Are the modifications required for Common Start described somewhere?

Q. Are the changes I mad correct?

Any help is appreciated.

  • B Lench,

This board and the GUI with it is not made for a common starts. As the GUI only sends out the ToF of one TDC at a time. Please send me a schematic/block diagram of the setup you would like to achieve.

  • Hi Bharat,

With all due respect, I'm sure you are mistaken about the TOF board. That's what the SMA connector labeled "Common Start" is for. With respect to the GUI, I'm not sure what it's capable of as I don't have the [LabVIEW] source code - do you have the source code for the GUI?  As we intend to write our own application, we don't need, and aren't constrained by, limitations of the "factory" GUI.

We are using the TDC7201-ZAK-EVM together with the MSP430F5529 Launch Pad.  The schematic for the TDC7201-ZAK-EVM is included with its user's manual.

If you are not familiar with this board, perhaps you could refer me to someone who is(?)

    Any help is appreciated.

  • B Lench,

The device TDC7201 is designed to be used for Lidar Applications. This requires the 2 STARTs to be tied together and it helps in the short time of measurements in particular. Please refer to the document http://www.ti.com/lit/an/snaa292/snaa292.pdf which explains the usage of the board in short time of flight using the common start pin. The above document explains the modification needed for the EVM for this measurement along with the register setting in the TDC7201-ZAX EVM GUI.

  • It's working! Thank you Bharat!
