AWR1642: AWR1642 PCB design

According to the layout guidelines of Hardware Design Checklist V0p7 AWR1642 SWRR154,the second layer is GND plane of RF,it should be a continuous GND plane on the layer2 below the RF traces.But below the RF balls in the AWR1642 device the L2 layer has a 15.8 mil diameter opening,below this opening the Layer 3 should be solid GND . What is purpose of a 15.8 mil diameter opening?

Hello ,

The hole in layer 2 just below the RF ball is to get a better impedance match for the IC to PCB transition.

One deeper queston, what parameters determine the 15.8mil diameter opening of the L2 layer? such as, DK,PCB thickness.

Hello Jianjun,

The hole diameter is derived from simulations to match the impedance. This would change with dielectric thickness and dielectric constant used.
