OPT101: Enable/Disable OPT101

Part Number: OPT101

Hi all,

I'm looking for a proper way to enable/disable an OPT101. Currently I have several opt101's (10+) and I need them to connect to the same signal (OUTPUT, pin 5) line. There is no need to read all of them at once. They must be read one-by-one.

I'm planning to switch the VS or COMMON pins with a via different transitors (switching) but not sure if thats the proper way to go.

FYI: I try to avoid adding extra components (like analog mux).

Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

As this is not a feature of the device, manually powering off unneeded devices would probably be the only option. I do not have much details on the operation in this case so have a few things you'd want to check to make sure this will work okay. When OPT101 is powered off can you confirm if output line is pulled low or high Z? High Z state would be needed to do this. Also would want to check that with the device powered off an external voltage in the range expected can be placed on the device output.

    Best,

    Alex

  • Hi Alex,

    Thanks for your quick reply.

Well, I have been doing some tests yesterday and it looks like i get the best results when powering off the VS (pin 3) line (powering low).  There will be some little noise on the output pin but I'm not sure how to get rid of that.

Below a quick drawing with the current setup including 2 OPT101's (A and B), 1 Output line and 2 'toggle' lines. These can be high and low. The circuit runs at 3.20-3.30v adding a (normal) transistor will drop to a critical 2.65v so I will keep the transistor out while the OPT101 is not drawing too much current (0.20mA-0.41mA).

Any suggestions, improvements or concerns; welcome! Thanks.

  • Any feedback? Or suggestions? Thanks!

  • Hi,

I cannot provide much more input here unfortunately. From what you have described in the results from your testing this seems this could work, but please verify that the device is behaving as desired through testing.

    Best,

    Alex

  • Hi Alex, Thanks for your reply. I will give it a try in our prototype :)
