TDC7200EVM: Time interval measurement problem by using TDC7200EVM

Part Number: TDC7200EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC7200, TDC7201

Hello sir, I am facing problem to measure Time interval using TDC7200 EVM because it is not reading stop channel. It reads only start channel. I have confirmed this by removing stop signal from the port. In time of flight , only fine measurement is there and course measurement is blank. Please suggest me the possible reasons for this problem.

  • Hello,

Could you please provide some more information on your start and stop signals and external clock?

    - pulse width

    - expected measurement range

    - scope plots if available of start/stop and external clock.

Also knowing your register settings would help me debug the issue.

One setting that could be relevant:

  • Thank you sir for your reply, yes the problem was due to range of measurement , that has been resolved. I was measuring time interval between two signals of the order of picosecond. Now, Could you please help me in finding out the ICs or evaluation board that could measure time intervals in the range of 50 picosecond to milliseconds. I have seen TDC 7201 EVM which can be used for short duration measurements, but the min. Time interval is 250 ps.
I am new in this field, I am a Ph.D student, and I have to develop a hardware that can measure time difference of the order of 50 picosecond and also give offset by that measured time. So that the both the system could be synchronised. I working on time transfer.
    Thank you very much sir.

  • Hi Neelam,

The TDC7201 is the highest resolution TDC made by TI. Please see e2e post 833566 for more details.

Have you looked at the TDC-GP22 or TDC-GPX2 evaluation kit? It looks like they would meet your measurement range requirements.

    Gabriel

  • Hello sir, I am really so thankful for you quick response, and looking into my matter seriously. Yes, I have checked the datasheet of TDC GPX2, It is fulfilling my requirement. I am trying to use two channel TDC AS 6501 which is derived from GPX2. Sir, I am again requesting you to please help me in finding out the ICs which can give phase offset of the order of .022 degree for a 10 Mhz signal. As I had told you that i am working on time transfer, after measuring delays of the order of picosecond, I have to compensate that delay. For a 10 MHz  signal, I am not able to find out such phase shifter. I am new, and I have no senior  right now ,which could help me in this matter. You could also give me some contacts , email IDs, of experts , so that i could take guidance from them to completing my project.
    Thanking you
    Sincerely,

  • Neelam,

Unfortunately this topic is outside the expertise and scope of the sensors forum, but I would recommend taking your questions to the E2E clock and timing forum. They could advise you on some good options to explore at the least.

    Good luck on you project!

    Regards,

    Gabriel
