FDC2114EVM: FDC2114EVM

Part Number: FDC2114EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: FDC2114

Hi! I am using FDC2114EVM to measure capacitance. I connected my own sensor to the channel. I have some questions.

i) I can see the change of capacitance, but comparing to the LCR meter I used before, the rate of change is not that big. Is there any configuration setting that can affect the change of the capacitance value?

ii) Also, when I measure the capacitance, I think I need to know operation voltage and frequency, where I can know this information?

iii) May I know how registers' values can affect the measurement? my understanding is the registers are a kind of function of each part, and by changing the register's value, I also can change some function. Are there any reference number of registers?

  • Hello,

Thanks for posting your question. Here are some answers and the guidance.

    i) FDC2114 device is meant for capacitance change measurements and not a capacitor measurement device. The FDC device works in the principle of capacitance measurement due to change in the object and the object change results in the capacitance. Here is an app note describing the device principle.

ii) The FDC works on the principle of resonant architecture and the device operates such that the driver is always driving at resonance. See the link to understand more about the operation.

iii) Looking at the datasheet section 10.2.3.2 there is guidance on what are the initial settings. The device is meant for capacitance change and the settings would work if the application you are trying to explore and research is on the object or liquid level sensing application that measure a change in capacitance.
