AWR6843AOP: Collision Avoidance

Hi TI,

Why is the AWR6843AoP not mentioned for short range collision avoidance RADAR, such as for backup obstacle detection? It only seems to be for interior detection?

The AWR6843AoP device operates in the 60 GHz frequency band. This band is not licensed for use in ADAS applications like short range collision avoidance. The 77 GHz band has been licensed for this type of application and can be seen used in the 77 GHz devices, like AWR1642 and AWR1843.

Thanks, Kyle. I did a design with the AWR1642, fantastic experience with TI.

My application would not be ADAS, this would be an industrial truck application for things like cranes sensing obstacles, waste trucks backing up, etc.

Kyle, other than not ADAS, would the physics be suitable for short range obstacle avoidance, or should I test it?

I do have to say the the whole AWR1642 design experience was unbelievable, from the documentation to the reference design to the application to the supported use cases it had to be one of the most comprehensive development platform I have ever seen. I went to Bangalore (Mistral did the adaptation) and we did outdoor performance testing, it was quite something.

Yes, the AWR6843-AOP would certainly be suitable for short range obstacle avoidance. This change in the frequency band should not be considered a limitation. But you are certainly encouraged to test it and see if you observe a difference when compared with a 77 GHz device like the AWR1642.
