TMP461: Outside the box temperature sense of small cell

Part Number: TMP461
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP102, TMP117, TMP1075, TMP112

Hi team,

My customer is looking for outside the box temperature sense of small cell in 5G application.

I find the remote sensor of TMP461. Do we have the reference design or application note talking about temperature sensing outside the cage? Thanks.

  • Hi Feng bin Su,

Looking through our reference designs, I do not see any that specifically use this device in a 5G small cell application to measure external air temperature.

Technically you do not need to use a remote temperature sensor like to TMP461 to do this, you can use a local temperature sensor like the TMP117, TMP112, TMP1075, or TMP102 depending on the customer's preferred package types and temperature accuracy level. If they would like to do an ambient air measurement with a local temperature sensor we do have a few application notes on this (please see Design Considerations for Measuring Ambient Air Temperature (Rev. B), Ambient Temperature Measurement Layout Considerations).

If they would like to measure multiple measurement sites with a single sensor, then a remote temperature sensor such as the TMP461 is appropriate. The TMP461 measures both an integrated thermal diode inside the device (local temperature), and an external BJT. If they place a diode connected BJT so it is at ambient temperature, they can use the remote channel of the TMP461 to measure the temperature of that BJT.
