LDCCOILEVM: Thickness of the LDCCOILEVM-PCB

Part Number: LDCCOILEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LDC2114EVM, , LDC2114, LDCTOUCHCOMCOILEVM

Hi,

I'm planning to prototype some TOM-Buttons with LDC2114EVM and the LDCCOILEVM.

When breaking away the PCB of a single coil, there's not enough space for a (self-adhesive) spacer-layer,

to provide that the coil-diameter is only 60% of the bottom-cutout-diameter.

That's why I'm planning to fix the COILEVM-PCB on a sheet and surround it by other pieces of PCB. Then

there should be enough place to stick the spacer-layer on the PCB(s). Therefore I need to know how thick

the PCB of the LDCCOILEVM is (Haven't the COILEVM here, yet). Is it 1.5mm?

Regards,

Clemens

  • Hi Clemens,
    the LDCCOILEVM is 1.6mm thick.
We are launching a new coil EVM which was specifically designed for LDC2114 metal touch solutions: www.ti.com/.../ldctouchcomcoilevm . The PCB already includes FR4 spacer, so all that is needed is to put tape (for example 3M 467MC) and the metal (typically 0.6mm or 0.8mm stainless aluminum or stainless steel). The PCB is still out of stock, but will be in stock by the end of this week. Documentation for this PCB is already available at the link above.
  • Hi,

    thanks for your answer.

However, we'll use the LDCCOILEVM to evaluate different spacer layer thicknesses.

Is the LDCTOUCHCOMCOILEVM available via distributors, too?

    Regards

  • Hi Clemens,

as of today, the LDCTOUCHCOMCOILEVM is on the e-store available for order. It will also be available through distributors, but I can't give you an exact date when this will happen.

  • Hi Ben,
    thanks for the information.
There are only spare information about the layer stack of the LDCTOUCHCOMCOILEVM in the datasheet.
    E. g. information about the spacer layer's thickness.
Are these information available or whill they be available in future?

    Regards,
    Clemens
  • Hello Clemens,

thank you, it is a great idea to include the layer stack-up info in the user guide. I will add this information during the next update. Meanwhile, here is the layer stackup of the LDCTOUCHCOMCOILEVM:

In case you have any other feedback on the document, please feel free to post it here.

  • Hi Ben,

    thanks for your helpful answer.
One thing that might not be clear: When using the LDCCOILEVM with the LDC2114EVM
there are two possibilities to place the sensor capacitor. First one on the LDC2114EVM and second one on
the LDCCOILEVM. Do you recommend place the capacitor near to the LDC2114 or near to the sensor coil?

    Best regards,
    Clemens
