LM83: Reading Temperature Over Inches of Wire

Hi,

I found an app note for the LM83 that is updated from the old thru hole 2N3904 to a surface mount 3904. Can you simply connect a transistor as shown on the datasheet to the LM83 over, say, 15 inches of wire (cables between 2 different assemblies) and have it simply read the temperature?

Thanks Jose. I also noticed in the datasheet it says to keep the lines under 10cm if possible. That being the case, it's worth noting that I don't necessarily need absolute accuracy. We can likely calibrate out a certain error range.

Hi Go Bravos,

Using the 2N3904 transistor connected configuration either through-hole or surface mount should work. Here is the recommended NPN transistor MMBT3904LP. Yes you can connect the transistor as shown in the attachment here, but you must shield the DxP and DxN pins to prevent any noise coupling into the diode votlage signal.
