CCS/IWR1642: Functional Safety

Part Number: IWR1642
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1642

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I am looking into the IWR1642 for a Functional Safety application and I am wondering if your tools (compiler etc.) and software (RADARSS Firmware, TI RTOS, RTOS Drivers + OSAL, mmWaveLink, mmWaveAPI, and mmWaveLib are certified or certifiable under IEC 61508.

  • Hi

WIll you be developing your own application code?

    Thank you
    Cesar
  • We will be developing our own application code, but will leverage what code we can from your reference design.  I am trying to determine if your software components (TI RTOS, etc.) are an option for us or if we basically need to start the whole of firmware from scratch, excluding RADARSS which is hardcoded into the chip.  I'll have to ask the certifying agency about RADARSS....

  • Hello,

The Industrial device IWR1642 is similar to the Automotive device AWR1642. AWR1642 is planned to have a device variant that is safety-capable for ISO 26262. Safety-related documentation (FMEDA, Safety manual) to aid customers in obtaining certification can be provided under NDA for this device. Also, the safety-capability will apply to the Radar Subsystem (a.k.a. BSS) firmware which is provided by TI. The rest of the mmWave SDK and demonstration software and tools provided are not safety certified (only provided as a reference) so instead customers could use third-party tools and software that have been certified. There will be other Industrial devices in the future that will be safety-capable for IEC 61508, but there is no plan to investigate IEC 61508 capability for IWR1642 so that would be left to the customer if desired.

    Regards,
    John
