IWR1642BOOST: Wall penetration performance of IWR1642BOOST

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1642
Hi, I want to know about the wall penetration performance of the IWR1642?

How thick brick walls Can it penetrate and achieve the functions of people counting at the same time?

In addition, I tried to place the millimeter wave sensor on a 25cm cement wall. It could not detect any objects behind the wall, and there was no point cloud data back. I wonder if it can improve its penetration ability? Or only by reducing SNR?

thanks!

  • Hi,

We have an experiment called Detecting Walls of Different materials in the mmWave Industrial Toolbox. The objective of this experiment is to determine if TI mmWave devices can detect walls of various materials, including a brick wall, at varying distances and angles and an object placed behind the wall.

As shown in the results section, while the sensor was able to detect objects behind drywall and glass, it could not detect objects behind a brick wall. The sensor could detect the object behind a brick wall in certain orientation but it was likely due to diffraction around the wall. We conducted this experiment with a brick wall about 4 cm thick and it caused significant attenuation. A 25 cm brick wall would cause even stronger attenuation which may not allow the sensor to detect objects behind it.
