CCS/IWR1443: Selection of mmWave Device for Application

Part Number: IWR1443
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1642, IWR6843, IWR6843ISK,

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello TI,

I am Selecting mmWave Device for Specific application which is Accurate Indoor Human presence detection

1.Need to avoid inanimate Objects like Fan,Curtains, Plants (detect only presence of man)

2.No false trigger(Detection release only when Human out of mmWave device detection range)

3.High Accuracy motion detection

4.work as Standalone(Self Configure)

I confuse when compare the mmWave Device specification, I attache IWR Device Comparison

Help me to mmWave device selection for my application, Which device is suitable for my application....?

Thank,

Rahul

    Hello Rahul,

The Indoor False Detection Mitigation lab has been developed to work with the IWR6843ISK. If you are interested in developing based from this example demo I would suggest using the IWR6843. Note that a critical difference between the IWR6843 and IWR1642 is the RF frequency range - the regulations of your region may determine which one is appropriate for your application.

  • Hello Rahul Surawase48,

Where did you get the comparison table? I found other place IWR6843 doesn't support any CAN or CAN-FD. It seems a mistake in the table, i.e., IWR1643 support CAN-FD, IWR1443 support CAN, but IWR6843 doesn't support any CAN.

    Best Regards,

    Tao

    Hello Tao,

The table is from the datasheet. The IWR6843 does support CAN-FD

  • Hello Amanda

Thanks for your info. I wonder why TI made this new product, while xWR1xxx maybe better than IWR6843. As I understanding 76G~81GHz of xWR1xxx has better accuracy and richer point-cloud data. If 24GHz will be limited, it seems 76-81GHz is better than 60Hz of IWR6843.

    Hello Tao,

Accuracy is a function of SNR.

Richer/density of point cloud can be determined by range resolution - range resolution is determined by the bandwidth. Therefore generally you should not see significant difference in range resolution since both the 6843 and 1443/1642 support 4GHz bandwidth.

Whether the xwr1xxxx device or xwr6xxxx device is the correct option for users will largely depends on the user's application and regional regulations.

  • Hello Amanda,

    Thanks!

Is there such document that talking about how to choose the 3 mmWave sensor on different application.

We will mostly use mmWave sensor on UAV drone for collision avoidance of 5/16” objects, beams(metal or concrete), wall, etc. Which one would you recommend us to use?

    Hello Tao,

There is not a document as you've descirbed. Our interpretation of current regulatory environment is that 77GHz mmWave sensors have limited applications for unlicensed use, including automotive and some industrial applications. The 60GHz devices operate in and around an ISM frequency band, which can enable unlicensed operation for a much wider variety of industrial applications. We suggest that all customers review the regulatory rules that govern their market region and validate this interpretation for their specific application.
