Dear T.I Team

May I ask why there are different kinds of coil shape. Does it related to sensing distance and shape of the conductor target? Which coil can give the longest sensing distance?

Could you please give us the detailed information the purpose of each coil? We want to try it to the LDC0851 evm we purchased. Thank you for the answer.

Janine,

You can read the sensor design app note to learn more about coil design, but in essence, a larger coil provides longer sensing distance. Additionally, the shape of the target metal often should be a similar size as the coil (for distance sensing applications).

Please note that these coils are not designed for the LDC0851. The LDC0851 is an inductive switch, which means that it needs two similar coils to work.

The information below is from T.I. It says that the coil board can be used with any LDC evaluation module. Also, from Luke Lapointe post he is using 2 identical coils for LDC0851evm.

how about if we use stacked coil design, using 8 layers? Do you think it could work? We try to design rectangular shape and follow the parameters from LDC REFERENCE COILS USERS GUIDE.

I am curious about this stretched type of coil. Why is it design like this way? Does it related to sensing angle?

Yes, the reference you found is accurate. With two of the LDCCoilEVMs you can test the LDC0851. My apologies for the confusion.

The stretched coil is typically used with either the LDC1612, LDC1614, LDC1314, or the LDC1312. Here is an app note that discusses this application:

Dear Clancy,

Does LDC1614 use 2 identical coils? Designing a stretched coil (4 layers) for LDC1614, does the rules is the same with LDC0851 ? first layer is clockwise, 2nd layer is counterclockwise?

We are going to purchase the LDC1614evm after the LDC0851evm. We find it very interesting because it is using a stretched coil. This time, we have a project that is focused on inductive sensing. We will use TI inductive sensor. Please bear with me if i have lots of question. Thank you for your response.
