HDC1080: Spec check

Part Number: HDC1080
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HDC2010, HDC2080, ADS1118, MSP430G2553, ADS1013

Hi Sirs,

Sorry to bother you.

Need your assistance on temp. & humidity sensor survey; Combo sensor is good.
 - temp sensor  :
internal ambient temperature sensor sensing range of at least −30°C to +60°C with accuracy in the range ±0.3 °C in the operating
          temperature range
 - humidity sensor
        Humidity accuracy within at least 2% RH between 20% and 60% (±3% from 0-20%, ±3% from 60-70%, ±4% 70-100%)

So does HDC1080 is a suitable solution? or have another solution can share?

  • Dear Shu-Cheng LIN,
Yes, you are correct, the HDC1080 meets your requirements, but we also have the HDC2010 and HDC2080 devices as well, which are next gen of that family and have less current draw along with faster conversion times - if you have a low power application, any of the three may work here, but it is a consideration. The only question that may be left is your application requirement for input voltage range - the HDC1080 has input from 2.7VDC to 5.5VDC whereas the HDC2010 and HDC2080 have input range of 1.62VDC to 3.6VDC.

  • Hi Sirs,

    Thanks for your reply.

After check HDC2010/2080 sensor pin-out; it seems that no extra 2 pins for external K-type temp sensor probe.

(there is external sensor, plug to device via K type connector; and we need to link it to internal combo sensor to ensure A/D work and reading of temp.).

Can you please check and guide us on this?
           1. any other sensor meet spec with extra pins for 2nd sensor?
           2. or any solution (A/D and code on MCU) to read such external temp sensor probe?

  • Dear Shu-Cheng LIN -

the HDC2010 or HDC2080 are integrated humidity and temperature sensor devices, with I2C interface to MCU. You are correct, they have no interface or conditioning circuitry inside to accommodate an external temperature probe / thermocouple as you mention you are using.

Here are some reference designs I can point you to for such application needs as you request -

(ADS1118 BoosterPack, with K-Type Probe interface and PGA ==> 16 bit ADC ==> SPI ==> MCU)

    (user guide)

    (MSP430G2553 code example)

(a simpler ADS1118 reference design (not a BoosterPack), with with K-Type Probe interface and PGA ==> 16 bit ADC ==> SPI ==> MCU)

    (reference guide)

So then I can imagine your basic system will look like this:

  • Hi Sirs,
    Thanks for your reply.
So we only could choose ADS1118 if we need support extra 2 pins for external K-type temp sensor probe?
Because the cost is too expensive.
So, would you please provide normal spec temp sensor with A/D converter (remote)?
In fact, this one, is only for external temp probe.
Customer PRD not define it as high local (on board) sensor.

    Thanks!!
  • if you are using K type sensor probe - specifically - this is what/the kind of design approach you would need to take. If you can open the requirements up for yourself, then you can consider other temperature probe types.

There is an ADS1013, - in that family of parts which has 12 bits of resolution versus the 16 bits the ADS1118 offers, and is less expensive.
