LM35: attaching lm35 to heat sink

according to data sheet the lm35 comes in a metal can type. Can the metal "can" be soldered to a copper heat sink and is the can isolated?

Mark,

The LM35 metal TO-CAN package cannot be soldered to a copper heat sink. It is not isolated as the case is connected to the GND pin.

In order to attach device to a heatsink you would need to use some sort of electrically isolated, but thermally connected epoxy.

looking for any small metal can type npn or pnp that can be soldered to a copper heat sink. Using as a temp sensor. Must be an isolated can.

Hi Mark,

Unfortunately, we do not have any packages that fit that description.

To reiterate, you need to use some sort of electrically isolated, but thermally connected epoxy in order to use our devices soldered to a copper heat sink.

Here is a part that TI might want to manufacture. A small metal can type pnp or npn transistor where the can is isolated. The can is soldered to the copper heat sink

The closest that I can find so far is some 15 amp to-220 diodes from a different company. These have an isolated tab but i dont need to use a large to220 - just a small can device.like a to-46. The isolated can allows soldering multiple parts on the same heat sink. No hardware needed and the sensor is going to stay put with good heat transfer
