TMP116EVM: Eval board/gui locks up while running correctly. Cannot restart without errors. Parts bricked??

Part Number: TMP116EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP117EVM, TMP116, TMP117

Title says it all, GUI installed, part running, taking data all very nice.   After a period of time (hour or so), the GUI crashes.  The system cannot be restarted (other than demo mode) without receiving errors and locking up.  Fresh gui installs on different computers make us think the error is on the  tmp116evm itself.    A second tmp116evm board operated correctly initially though also errored out after an hour.

We're hopeful of using multiple parts within a new system being developed, but this is not looking good at this point if the eval board crashes.

The errors we get are shown below in the screen clips.  Restarts just comeback to these same errors.

Any clue on how to reset these parts so they operate again and also any clue as to why this is locking up once running so nicely?

Thanks,

Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with the TMP116EVM GUI software.

    • It sounds like you have recreated this issue on a few machines, what operating system are they running?
    • Can you verify that you are using the Rev B version of the GUI?
    • Is this issue following the EVM boards? Meaning if you plug a previously non-working EVM into one of your PCs with a fresh GUI install, do you still receive start up errors?
    • Try the TMP117EVM GUI, with one of the EVMs giving you issues, and let me know if it works correctly.

  • Hi Jeff,

Any updates on this issue or have you resolved the problem?

  • Hi Brandon,  tried replying on email - maybe that "bounce" thing doesn't work. So I'll try the online system.   Terry Fabian is working on this for me.

    “Hello Brandon,

I’m working with Jeff regarding the two TMP116EVM boards that we have in our lab for monitoring the temperature of some of our PCB boards.  Jeff asked me to respond directly to you regarding issues, questions, and other follow-up.

    Answers to your questions follow:

    • It sounds like you have recreated this issue on a few machines, what operating system are they running?  We are running Windows 10.
    • Can you verify that you are using the Rev B version of the GUI?  We are using the Rev B version.
    • Is this issue following the EVM boards? Meaning if you plug a previously non-working EVM into one of your PCs with a fresh GUI install, do you still receive start up errors?  Yes, the issue is following the EVM board. For the non-working board, I’ve loaded the TMP software on two other Windows 10 computers and the board misbehaves in the same manner.
    • Try the TMP117EVM GUI, with one of the EVMs giving you issues, and let me know if it works correctly.  I tried running the EVM with issues using the TMP117EVM GUI and it still doesn’t operate correctly.  Upon plug-in, the Green LED is lit and the Orange LED is also lit and never turns off.  I plugged in our known good board and that behaves properly.

  • Thanks Jeff and Terry,

I'm trying to recreate this phenomenon to pinpoint what the cause may be. Is there anything unique about the way you are using the GUI. For example, are you using multiple TMP116s on one bus, or changing the TMP116 address frequently? Have you made any updates or changes to the onboard firmware?

Also, please verify that you have installed Labview Runtime 2016 on these systems. This is included with the TMP116EVM GUI installer.

In the mean time, if your application allows it I suggest using the TMP117EVM GUI to prevent this issue from reoccurring with any other EVMs. These parts are pin-to-pin, and the EVMs are compatible, so all functionality should be available.

  • Hi Jeff,

    Any updates?

  • Hi Brandon,   we moved over to the tmp117 gui as suggested.   It seems to be more robust and allowed me to do my eval with my remaining board.  I did notice that the gui would hit/miss lock up when toggling the pin polarity setting.  This required a hard reset (unlug) to get the part running again.    We have not let it sit and run for hours yet - we'll do that again in a couple days, that's when we lost the first board.    To your other questions, no we haven't altered any firmware etc...   just plug and go with the gui's.

    Thanks,

    Jeff
