IWR6843: What are some ways to solve the oxygen absorption problem with this 60GHz device?

We are looking at the possibility of using this device in lieu of the IWR1642 because we wan to use it in a stationary solution. 80Ghz radar is not approved except for mobile radars. In lieu of getting a permanent waiver from the FCC, we would like to use the 60GHz range part instead. The biggest issue is getting about the same distance that the 80GHz device achieves. Besides more power, are there some software methods that can refocus the power or any other way to match the IWR1642?

Hello,

You concern is valid, oxygen absorption level is high at 60 GHz, Its approximately 4-10dB /Km.

Hence, it's still could be used for shorter distance applications such as 50-100m distance applications without incurring significant penalty in terms of attenuation.

One of the option is to design higher gain Antenna to meet the link budget requirement for your distance target.

You could refer to below demo/ lab from our Resource explorer where demonstration "50m Outdoor People Tracking and False Detection Filtering - 68xx" application using 60GHz mmWave device.

Thank you for the answer.

We have discussed increasing the antenna gain. Is there a way to change the firmware to achieve a higher coding gain, like lengthening the chirp width? What would the tradeoff be to doing this?
