TIDEP-01011: TIDEP-01012 imaging radar

Part Number: TIDEP-01011
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDEP-01012, AWR1243

Respected,

When i searched for long range TI radar sensor i found TIDEP-01012 EVM which is not for sale and it is interesting.

http://www.ti.com/tool/TIDEP-01012

By cascading four of AWR1243 it is able to detect vehicles at 350 m and humans at 120 m ,

Q1: If i cascade more number of AWR1243 with a power amplifier at Transmitter antenna end, could i able to increase the coverage range of 1km ?

Q2: Is there any limit in cascading of AWR1243 ? if any limit is there please let me know

Q3: Any improvement in detection if I cascade more number of AWR1243?

Please do reply as soon as possible .Thanks in advance !

  • Hello Naveen,

I would recommend going through the following app note that describes how various system parameters like range, velocity , resolution etc. get impacted with various factors :

In general the range is limited by either SNR or IF frequency. Increasing the TX output power (by using multiple Tx at the same time for form a  stronger beam)  or increasing antenna gain helps improve SNR part of it. The IF frequency aspect of the range can be solved by using very slow ramp. But this impacts other aspects like max velocity or resolution etc. From the app note you can compute the values based on the over all system goals you have.

    Vivek

  • To answer the question (2) and (3) ,

    (2) Theoretically there is no limit of number of devices you can cascade. You just need to take care of the 20Ghz SYNC IN amplitude level reaching all the devices. You may need to use an amp if you cascade too many devices.

    (3) In general cascading provided more number of virtual receive channels which drastically improves the angular resolution. The app note I pointed you to provided details on how this scales with number of virtual receive channels.

    regards,
    Vivek

  • I agree to the above answers

Please answer to my main Question

By cascading N number of AWR1243 can achieve detection upto 1km?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hello Naveen,

As indicated above there are many other aspects that would play a role on the determining if 1Km detection is feasible.  Unless you  put  your system requirements together you will not be able to estimate if all your other conditions are being met at 1Km range. But if you look at the only requirements being 1Km range, that is possible even with single chip AWr1243 sensor with a large enough antenna gain.
