TDC7200: TOF in the 0 to 20 ns region

Part Number: TDC7200
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC7201

Need to measure the the separation between two pulses in the 0 to 20 ns range. The part is only specified top be used in the 12 ns to 500 ns range. Seems that if you could get the ring counter ON, you could measure below 12 ns.

  • Hello BNovus,

Sorry for this late response. Please note that the TDC7200 device has a minimum response time of 12ns between a START Signal & STOP signal to measure this time.

However there is a combined mode in TDC7201 device which lets the user to measure a minimum of 0.25ns. Since this device has 2 TDC7200 within it it can be used to measure time as low as 0.25ns.

  • The 2701 is only available in BGA. Can I use the 2700 by applying a pulse to start the ring counter and then measure the short interval?

  • Bnovus,

You will need a TDC7201 device to measure the small distance of 0.25ns time of flight. It is not possible to apply a pulse to the ring counter & measure the time interval. You will need a pulse at the START pin and there is a minimum of 12ns between a start & stop signal in the TDC7200 device. You can try to use 2 separate TDC7200 as an experiment to check if it fits your application.
