IWR6843ISK: synchronized operation of multiple modules

Part Number: IWR6843ISK

I would like to know whether we can control four boards of the IWR68431ISK EVM in synchronization each other.

If yes, could anyone let me know what items are necessary for the synchronized operation?

Does anyone know some technical articles relating to the synchronized operation of multiple IWR68431ISK EVMs?

  • HI,

Are you asking about frame synchronization between EVMs?   So that all the board can send the chirps at the same time?

    Best,

    Zigang

  • Hi Zigang,

Thanks a lot for the quick response.

    I believe, Yes.

Your answer is that all the boards can send the chirp signal simultaneously, right?

So, let me confirm, if the board-A and -B are being frame-synchronized, we can use a Tx of A and a Rx of B as if it were a single EVM board, right?

I hope I have understood your point correctly. And, thank you in advance for your kind advice.

  • HI, Masayuki:

I believe it is possible to do frame synchronization with several EVMs.   But to achieve TX of A and RX of B, you need to have clock synchronization, otherwise, the phase error will be very large.   To achieve clock synchronization, you can take a look at cascade radar design notes located at http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/tiduen5/tiduen5.pdf.  take a look at section 2.3.3 20 GHz Local Oscillator (LO) Distribution

For the frame synchronization, I know it is possible, but I am still looking for the application notes.

Let me know if this helps.

    Best,

    Zigang

  • Hi Masayuki,

As Zigang has stated, it sounds like you are looking for what we are calling "Cascaded" operation of the  individual IWR6x MMIC. The TI-Design application note above describes this our soon to be released Cascade EVM system. Another app note here (http://www.ti.com/lit/an/swra574a/swra574a.pdf) describes the Cascade operation itself.

Cascaded operation involves sharing digital frame sync/trigger as well as sharing the 20GHz LO between devices. Right now, the only device in our portfolio which supports this operation is the AWR1243P device.

    Thank you,

    -Randy

  • Hi Zigang,

Many many thanks for the prompt and helpful advice.

The section 2.3.2 and the 2.3.3 you pointed out is very beneficial for me. I believe it seems practically difficult to add the 20GHz local distribution on the ready-made EVM boards because there are no RF in/out ports in the EVM interfaces. I have understood that the totally synchronized radar setup with the use of the IWR68431ISK EVM boards is a difficult application at this point.

And again, thank you very much for your kind support.
