IWR6843: Change ODS Antenna Design

Part Number: IWR6843

Dear TI,

We are developing 6843 sensor module and will change the antenna design. Please help check if any software related setting or RF parameters have to be optimized if we change the antenna polarization design.

Attached please find the figure in the ppt file. First page indicate the original design and second page indicate our design.

Thanks.

  • Hi User,

I've asked an expert to look into this and we should have an answer for you in the next few days.

    Cheers,

    Akash

  • Hello,

You could change the antenna configuration, However there is small correction would be needed for Angle of arrival processing.

Please refer below receiver assignment in the current ODS EVM design.

In this configuration, RX1, RX2 and RX4,RX3  are inverted respectively

In your prpoposed case RX1,RX4 and RX2,RX3 would be inverted. This need to be taken case during the post processing stages.

Also, E plane and H planes are going to be changed, to get same Radiation pattern orientation you may need to rotate the sensor by 90 deg.

    Thanks and regards,

    CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.

  • Dear Chethan,

Thanks for your reply. Below is my detailed antenna layout proposal  for Rx and Tx.

Please help check if we have to adjust any software setting if we change the antenna to the  proposed ones.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi,

If you compare the original ODS design RX1 and RX2 are inverted, And RX4 and RX3 are inverted w.r.t to each other.

If you notice in your proposed design, RX1 and RX4 are inverted in the orientation, Hence when you process the Angle of arrival estimation data received through RX4 needs inversion. And it's same case with RX2 and RX3. RX3 is inverted w.r.t to RX2.

This change you need to incorporate in your angle estimation algorithm.

If you want to know more about angle of arrival estimation algorithm you could review the below training video.

  • Hello,

Continuing comment on the above example, you could refer to the angle estimation code in the industrial_toolbox for the overhead people counting demo

you could see these RXs are inverted (RX1 & RX4) in the angle processing code as shown below.

Please note, this uses TDM MIMO configuration from TX1, TX2 and TX3, hence you would see receiver phase rotation vector has 12 elements (4*3), and Hence it's repeated 3 times.

In your case you may have to invert RX4 and RX3 elements.

Source code for this you could find the below location from the TI resource explorer tool box.

     mmwave_industrial_toolbox_4_1_0__win\mmwave_industrial_toolbox_4_1_0\labs\people_counting\68xx_overhead_people_counting\src\dss\dss_data_path.c

    Thanks and regards,

  • Hello,

I have noticed above information did not solve your problem?

Could you please elaborate why it did not solve your problem, what else information do you need?

    Thanks and regards,
